Shellac
La gomme laitier est une résine sécrétée par l'insecte lac féminin, sur les arbres dans les forêts de l'Inde et de la Thaïlande. Il est transformé et vendu sous forme de flocons secs, qui sont dissous dans de l'éthanol pour fabriquer une gomme à glaçons liquide, qui est utilisée comme colorant à brosser, glaçage et finition en bois. Shellac fonctionne comme une amorce naturelle résistante, un scellant, un tannin-bloquant, un anti-odeur, une tache et un vernis brillant. Shellac a déjà été utilisé dans des applications électriques car il possède de bonnes qualités d'isolation et étanche l'humidité. Des enregistrements de phonogrammes ont également été réalisés lors de l'ère d'enregistrement de 78-rpm qui s'est terminée à l'ouest au cours des années 1950. À partir du moment où il a remplacé les finitions de pétrole et de cire au 19ème siècle, la coquille a été l'une des finitions de bois dominantes dans le monde occidental jusqu'à ce qu'elle soit en grande partie remplacée par la laque de nitrocellulose dans les années 1920 et 1930. Shellac is a resin secreted by the female lac bug, on trees in the forests of India and Thailand. It is processed and sold as dry flakes, which are dissolved in ethanol to make liquid shellac, which is used as a brush-on colorant, food glaze and wood finish. Shellac functions as a tough natural primer, sanding sealant, tannin-blocker, odour-blocker, stain, and high-gloss varnish. Shellac was once used in electrical applications as it possesses good insulation qualities and it seals out moisture. Phonograph records were also made of it during the 78-rpm recording era which ended in the west during the 1950s. From the time it replaced oil and wax finishes in the 19th century, shellac was one of the dominant wood finishes in the western world until it was largely replaced by nitrocellulose lacquer in the 1920s and 1930s.
