Snottite
La snottite est un biofilm de bactéries extrémophiles unicellulaires qui s'accrochent des murs et des plafonds des grottes et sont similaires aux petites stalactites, mais ont la consistance du mousqueton. Dans les grottes de Frasassi en Italie, plus de 70% des cellules de Snottite ont été identifiées comme Acidithiobacillus Thiooxidans, avec des populations plus petites incluant un archaeon dans le clade non cultivé de "G-plasma" de Thermoplasmatales et une bactérie dans la famille des Acidimicrobiaceae. Les bactéries tirent leur énergie de la chimiosynthèse des composés soufrés volcaniques, y compris le H2S et la solution d'eau chaude dégoulinant par le haut, produisant de l'acide sulfurique. Pour cette raison, leurs déchets sont très acides, avec des propriétés similaires à l'acide de la batterie. Les snottites ont été portées à l'attention des chercheurs Diana Northup et Penny Boston les étudier dans une grotte toxique de soufre appelée Cueva de Villa Luz, à Tabasco, au Mexique. Le terme "snottite" a été donné à ces caractéristiques de la grotte par Jim Pisarowicz en 1986. Snottite is a biofilm of single-celled extremophilic bacteria which hang from the walls and ceilings of caves and are similar to small stalactites, but have the consistency of snot. In the Frasassi Caves in Italy, over 70% of cells in Snottite have been identified as Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans, with smaller populations including an archaeon in the uncultivated 'G-plasma' clade of Thermoplasmatales and a bacterium in the Acidimicrobiaceae family. The bacteria derive their energy from chemosynthesis of volcanic sulfur compounds including H2S and warm-water solution dripping down from above, producing sulfuric acid. Because of this, their waste products are highly acidic, with similar properties to battery acid. Snottites were brought to attention by researchers Diana Northup and Penny Boston studying them in a toxic sulfur cave called Cueva de Villa Luz, in Tabasco, Mexico. The term "snottite" was given to these cave features by Jim Pisarowicz in 1986.
