Un synchro est en effet un transformateur dont le couplage primaire-secondaire peut être modifié en modifiant physiquement l'orientation relative des deux enroulements. Les synchros sont souvent utilisés pour mesurer l'angle d'une machine tournante telle qu'une plate-forme d'antenne. Dans sa construction physique générale, il ressemble beaucoup à un moteur électrique. L'enroulement primaire du transformateur, fixé au rotor, est excité par un courant alternatif qui, par l'induction électromagnétique, fait couler des courants dans trois enroulements secondaires connectés à Y fixés à 120 degrés l'un de l'autre sur le stator. Les grandeurs relatives des courants secondaires sont mesurées et utilisées pour déterminer l'angle du rotor par rapport au stator, ou les courants peuvent être utilisés pour entraîner directement un synchro du récepteur qui tourne à l'unisson avec l'émetteur synchro. Synchros are often used for measuring the angle of a rotating machine such as an antenna platform. In its general physical construction, it is much like an electric motor. The primary winding of the transformer, fixed to the rotor, is excited by an alternating current, which by electromagnetic induction, causes currents to flow in three Y-connected secondary windings fixed at 120 degrees to each other on the stator. The relative magnitudes of secondary currents are measured and used to determine the angle of the rotor relative to the stator, or the currents can be used to directly drive a receiver synchro that will rotate in unison with the synchro transmitter.
