La Syrie, officiellement la République arabe syrienne, est un pays d'Asie occidentale, bordant le Liban et la Méditerranée à l'ouest, la Turquie au nord, l'Irak à l'est, la Jordanie au sud et Israël au sud-ouest. Sa capitale, Damas, figure parmi les plus anciennes villes habitées en permanence dans le monde. Un pays de plaines fertiles, de hautes montagnes et de déserts, abrite des groupes ethniques et religieux divers, y compris la majorité de la population arabe qui comprend; Alawite, druze, sunnite et chrétienne. D'autres groupes ethniques comprennent; Arméniens, Assyriens, Kurdes, Yezidi et Turcs. Les Arabes sunnites forment le plus grand groupe de population en Syrie. In the Islamic era, Damascus was the seat of the Umayyad Caliphate and a provincial capital of the Mamluk Sultanate in Egypt. The modern Syrian state was established after the first World War as a French mandate, and represented the largest Arab state to emerge from the formerly Ottoman-ruled Arab Levant.
