Extensible Markup Language est un langage de balisage qui définit un ensemble de règles pour coder des documents dans un format à la fois lisible par l'utilisateur et lisible par machine. Il est défini dans la spécification XML 1.0 produite par le W3C, et plusieurs autres spécifications connexes, toutes les normes libres ouvertes. Although the design of XML focuses on documents, it is widely used for the representation of arbitrary data structures, for example in web services. Many application programming interfaces have been developed to aid software developers with processing XML data, and several schema systems exist to aid in the definition of XML-based languages.
