La numérotation basée sur zéro est la numérotation dans laquelle l'élément initial d'une séquence est attribué à l'index 0 plutôt qu'à l'index 1 tel qu'il est typique dans les circonstances quotidiennes. Sous la numérotation basée sur zéro, l'élément initial est parfois appelé l'élément zeroth, plutôt que le premier élément; Zeroth est un nombre ordinaire inventé correspondant au nombre zéro. Dans certains cas, un objet ou une valeur qui n'appartient pas à une séquence donnée, mais qui pourrait être naturellement placé avant son élément initial, peut être appelé l'élément zeroth. In some cases, an object or value that does not belong to a given sequence, but which could be naturally placed before its initial element, may be termed the zeroth element. There is not wide agreement regarding the correctness of using zero as an ordinal as it creates ambiguity for all subsequent elements of the sequence when lacking context. Numbering sequences starting at 0 is quite common in mathematics, in particular in combinatorics. In computer science, array indices also often start at 0, so computer programmers might use zeroth in situations where others might use first, and so forth.
