वह संमति जो किसी सार्वजनिक पद पर
किसी को निर्वाचित करने या न करने, अथवा सर्वसाधारण से
संबंध रखनेवाले किसी नियम या कानून आदि के निर्धारित
होने या न होने आदि के विषय में प्रकट की जाती है । किसी
सार्वजनिक कार्य आदि के होने या न होने आदि के संबंध में
दी हुई अलग अलग राय । छंद ।
विशेष—आजकल सभा समितियों में निर्वाचन के संबंध में या
और किसी विषय में सभासदों अथवा उपस्थित लोगों की
संमतियाँ ली जाती हैं । यह संमति या तो हाथ उठाकर या
खड़े होकर या कागज आदि पर लिखकर प्रकट की जाती है ।
इसी संमति को वोट कहते हैं । आजकल प्रायः म्युनिसिपल
और डिस्ट्रिक्ट बोर्डों तथा काउंसिलों (प्रांतीय विधानसभा, लोकसभा) आदि के चुनाव में कुछ विशिष्ट अधिकारप्राप्त लोगों
से वोट लिया जाता है । भारतवर्ष में प्राचीन बौद्धकाल में और
उसके पहले भी इससे मिलती जुलती संमति देने की प्रथा थी,
जिसे छंदस् या छंद कहते थे ।
