His mother is referred to as "Constance (née de Havilland)" with de Havilland linked through to the de Havilland Aircraft Company article. There's an implication therefore she's part of the family of the company founder Geoffrey de Havilland (although linking to a company is a little EGGish). But what makes it really EGG is that nowhere in the article is this expressly stated - it's very odd to just link it in that way without explanation. What's even odder is that Cresswell appears to have worked for de Havilland in later life - but there's no reference to his family connection with his new employer. I tried to check whether it's just a case of his mother coincidently having the same name (and the link removed) but can't find any sources on that. I assume it's not a coincidence - there's a later cryptic reference to "Fired partly by his mother's stories of joy flights in pre-war Britain..." which suggests she was indeed connected to the aircraft family. I think (1) there's a sentence missing explaining who is mother was (2) possibly another sentence missing giving some background explaining whether or not his family connection was relevant to his joining de Havilland. Hello, I was just reading this and wondered the same thing (i.e. if someone had just jumped to a conclusion about a family relationship)- this https://www.awm.gov.au/sites/default/files/chivalry-2023.pdf seems to say that his mother was related to the aircraft manufacturer de Havillands ("Richard, known as Dick, was born in Franklin, Tasmania, on 27 July 1920. His mother, Constance, was from the De Havilland family; they ran one of the largest aircraft factories in Britain.") , and it seems to be at least a decent source in terms of research that should have gone into it etc. Not 100% though. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.240.193.166 (talk) 21:55, 27 July 2025 (UTC)[]
Hi guys, yes there was a maternal connection with the de Havilland aircraft family, per Mr Double Seven (the main source for the entire article and, incidentally, Cresswell's entry in Chivalry). Linking to the company was my shorthand way of referencing it. It didn't raise questions at the various reviews of the article some years ago but if it does now that's reason enough to make it more explicit. Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 15:42, 28 July 2025 (UTC)[]
Thanks. Really interesting and well written article. But is there anything to be said about how his family connection played with his employment with de Havilland? It seems notable he joined the family firm - was he "given" a role or was he the one doing them a favour because of his air force record? It surely wasn't a coincidence he joined de Havilland? Or was it? DeCausa (talk) 16:00, 28 July 2025 (UTC)[]
Mr Double Seven simply says Cresswell got wind of a vacancy at de Havilland Australia, nothing about his family connection. There weren't a lot of similar firms he could have joined back then -- Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation, Government Aircraft Factories, and I think Hawker might've had an Australian division, but that's about it. So I wouldn't necessarily read anything into him joining DHA as opposed to another firm in this relatively small field... Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 17:13, 28 July 2025 (UTC)[]
