Mass message sender granted

- @Tanakayuyuko: Hi there, and thanks for your message! Good on you for checking after noticing the maintenance tag. :) On your questions:
- 1. When is an example notable enough to include?
- On most articles, individual examples should only be included if they are supported by reliable secondary sources and are discussed in a way that shows they add something meaningful to the topic. Wikipedia tries to avoid long lists of trivial or loosely‑connected examples, so the key test is whether independent sources treat the example as significant to understanding the subject, rather than just illustrating that it happens. You can also look at policies like WP:WEIGHT and WP:LISTCRITERIA for guidance. If an article does have a maintenance tag noting excessive examples, then it's probably better to try trim the list rather than add to it.
- 2. How do I know if what I am adding is substantial enough?
- The long answer is that any information you add to Wikipedia should meet Wikipedia's three content policies: verifiability, neutral point of view and no original research.
- As a shorter answer, I would suggest asking yourself, am I improving the encyclopedia by adding this content? If so, it's probably good content. A couple of other questions that might be helpful:
- Is the information backed by reliable, independent sources?
- Would a reader reasonably expect to find this information in an encyclopaedic article on the topic?

[edit]Hi Emma Thanks for your offer to help. I'm aged 87 and, frankly, somewhat overwhelmed by all this Wiki technical jargon which is new to me. That said, I have been complimented on my writing and content and have had many op-ed articles published on political and economic issues. My objective is to replace the existing Wiki entry for my wife, Margaret Daly, in which we played no part, and which does no justice to the story she has to tell, with a much longer piece. I have already started this and hope to finish a handwritten version over the next couple of days. My first question, therefore, is whether there is any length limit to these pieces? Let's start from there and I look forward to working with you. I should just mention that, sadly, Margaret suffers from mild dementia but we've worked as a team throughout the whole period we'll be talking about

- I absolutely know what you mean about the Wikipedia technical jargon; it's very overwhelming when you first start and feels like quite a steep learning curve. We all have to start somewhere, and the important thing is to ask questions (as you're doing).
- Length limits
- To answer your first question, there isn't any strict length limit for Wikipedia articles. There are some guidelines about article size though, which suggest that at around 10,000 words it could be worth trimming an article or separating it into separate articles (see Wikipedia:Article size). For a biographical article, it would be unusual for it to reach that sort of length (unless we're talking about someone like a US president).
- How to write about your wife
- Because Margaret is your wife, Wikipedia considers you to have a conflict of interest when writing about her. That doesn't mean you can't contribute information (or that your contributions aren't welcome - they are!), but it does mean that the recommended approach is different. Rather than replacing the existing article yourself, you should instead propose edits on the article's "talk page" (more on that below), so that independent editors can review and add the material if it fits Wikipedia's guidelines.
- The reason for this is that Wikipedia has to be neutral and fair, and it's very hard to write neutrally and fairly about your own spouse (even for people who are experienced writers, as you clearly are). Wikipedia has a guide on this kind of situation which might be helpful to read: Wikipedia:Plain and simple conflict of interest guide.
- What is a talk page?
- Every article has a talk page, and its purpose is to provide space for editors to discuss editing that page. You can access it by clicking the "Talk" tab at the top of the article. The talk page for your wife's article is here: Talk:Margaret Daly. This is the best place for you to propose edits to the article.
- Other advice and next steps
- There are some other points you should keep in mind while working on your handwritten draft (I've also included links to the relevant Wikipedia policies, if you're interested to learn more):
- Wikipedia articles are written in a neutral, encyclopaedic tone, rather than as personal or first-hand narratives. See Wikipedia:Neutral point of view.
- Everything on Wikipedia must be verifiable. Statements generally need to be backed by published sources that are independent of the subject (e.g. newspapers or news websites, magazines, books). See Wikipedia:Verifiability.
- Wikipedia does not permit original research. This means material for which no reliable source has ever been published, and includes things like your own analysis of events or drawing a conclusion that is not clearly stated in a source. See Wikipedia:No original research.
- If you like, when you've finished your handwritten draft you could type it up (or a portion of it) into your personal test page here: User:Kenmarden77/sandbox. You could then send me a message on this page, and I can help you figure out the Wikipedia side of things (e.g. how to format it, whether it needs any additional sources, or any other questions you might have).

- @Gummersbach1616+$: Hi, welcome to Wikipedia! It looks like you're wanting to add an infobox to a biography draft. There are different ways to do this, depending on whether you're editing Wikipedia on phone or computer, or using the visual editor or source editor.
- I can see from your contributions that you look to be editing on mobile. If so, the easiest way to do add an infobox would be to:
- Go to Template:Infobox person and find the template under 'Blank template with basic parameters'.
- Copy and paste this template into the draft, at the top, above the first line of text.
- Fill in any of the fields that apply. You don’t need to complete every line, it's fine to leave lines blank if you don't have the information.
- There are also more specialised infoboxes (for example Template:Infobox football biography) but the generic 'person' infobox is a good starting point for most biographies.
- Another option is to go to an existing article that has an infobox you like, click Edit, and copy the infobox template from the top of that article. You can then paste it at the top of your draft and adjust the fields to fit the person you're writing about.

[edit]Dear Emma Thank you for all your helpful suggestions. As I anticipated, grappling with Wiki will be hugely formidable for someone like me with limited I/T skills. That said, I understand the the COI dimension and can give you some reassurances. Firstly I have read the Wiki profiles for three of Margaret's former colleagues, Barry Desmond (who will be mentioned in my piece),Terence (Terry) Wynne and the late Caroline Jackson, which I'll use as a model. Secondly, I have got independent corroboration available, mainly press articles or relevant pieces Margaret has had published. These include: 1988 Sunday Telegraph article with photographs of released Ethiopean princesses. 1982 Meat Traders Journal front page about slaughter house campaign. 1994 Various articles reporting leading West Indian cricketers endorsement of Margaret. Profile of Margaret published by Conservative Party. 1995 PR Weekly reporting on Margaret's international lobbying award. 1996 Copy of Eastern Star (Malaysia) reporting on Margaret's involvement with EC/ASEAN
Cogen programme.
2012 Article by Margaret "We need to redress the imbalance between citizens and Big Money. 2013 " " " " "Time for Prime Minister to come clean on European Union".
I have scanning issues at the moment but rest assured, these pieces are on my desk. Other material can be made available. The handwritten draft is now completed. It runs to 1680 words. I will Start typing this tomorrow and will forward it to you when available. I'm a slow typist and we depart on a five week holiday at the end of this month and it's possible I may encounter some constraining issues beyond my control. The kinds of articles you have listed (particularly newspaper coverage) are likely to be useful for supporting her Wikipedia article.
- At this stage, it may be helpful if I give some further guidance on how that sort of material is typically used on Wikipedia, as it's slightly different from writing an article or profile elsewhere. The key points I'd make are:
- Wikipedia articles are built primarily from independent, secondary sources (for example, newspaper articles written about Margaret).
- Material written by Margaret herself, or published by organisations she was closely connected with, is usually treated more cautiously and used only in a limited way.
- Articles are written as neutral summaries of what reliable sources say, rather than as a full narrative or personal account.
- A practical suggestion I would make at this point: as you type, add a note of which source(s) supports each section (for example, "this paragraph is supported by the 1988 Sunday Telegraph article"). That will make it much easier for me to help you convert it into Wikipedia format.
- But, all up, it sounds like you're making great progress, and I'll be very happy to help further whenever suits. One good thing about Wikipedia is there are no set deadlines, so whenever you're ready, just let me know.

Writing an autobiography is strongly discouraged (see Wikipedia:Autobiographies), because it's very difficult to keep the article neutral, and it must be based on independent sources rather than your own personal knowledge.

Welcome to Wikipedia, and thanks for your message. :) I'm currently away from my laptop for a couple of days due to Easter and can help you out properly when I get back, but in the meantime, to get it ready for publication, you will want to make sure each statement or quotation in the article is supported by a citation with a reliable source. This is due to Wikipedia's policy of verifiability. For example, the "most perfect voice in America" quotation has a citation. But the quotation in the next paragraph from Claire Forbes Crane doesn't and you would need to provide one before publishing the article (as otherwise the content could be removed).
- P.S. Don't worry too much about the exact formatting to use for citations; what matters most is that you provide enough information to identify the source.
