The Featured Article Medal
By the authority vested in me by myself it gives me great pleasure to present you with this special, very exclusive award created just for we few, we happy few, this band of brothers, who have shed sweat, tears and probably blood, in order to be able to proudly claim "I too have taken an article to Featured status". Seven Samurai

[edit]

Thanks for your work on Seven Samurai! It is mostly B-class. However (and this may seem nit-picky), there is a {{cn}} tag in the "Remakes" section that needs to be addressed. There should not be any unaddressed maintenance tags in a B-class article, otherwise it is not B-class. That one line either needs a source or it should come out (rather than assess it as C-Class). I looked at Alamat ng 7 kilabot for a possible source, which was not helpful. The only source there mentioning Seven Samauri was not citeable, which is OK for that article (as Start-class), but would not be OK for a B-class article. ButlerBlog (talk) 14:24, 15 January 2026 (UTC)[]

Butlerblog, oh apologies, i pre-empted myself a little bit. i was actually searching for a source when i received this message. i decided to excise it, i can't find any references to it and it's probably undue anyway. should i see it come up in a better source i'll re-add it.--Plifal (talk) 14:31, 15 January 2026 (UTC)[]
No worries - and no apologies necessary! I just happened to notice it, and I thought it was more constructive to reach out than it would have been to revert or re-class the article. Good work on the article! ButlerBlog (talk) 15:34, 15 January 2026 (UTC)[]
thank you kindly!! and for your own contributions!--Plifal (talk) 22:54, 15 January 2026 (UTC)[]

Thanks for your work on Seven Samurai. In your most recent edit, you added the sentence "This occurred until the Toei Company—the studio most associated with the genre—continued to see a high profit margin until the releases of Yojimbo (1961), Sanjuro (1962), and the Japanese release of The Magnificent Seven in the early 1960s."[1] I'm not sure I understand it - should it start "This continued, since the Toei Company..."? Also, there are too many "until"s at present. I'll let you sort it out.

Masato.harada, apologies, a lapse in my proofreading when recently editing it down. the newest edit should rectify any misunderstandings.--Plifal () 10:28, 3 February 2026 (UTC)[]

Your ongoing efforts to improve the encyclopedia have not gone unnoticed: You have been selected as Editor of the Week in recognition of your great contributions! (courtesy of the Wikipedia Editor Retention Project)

User:TechnoSquirrel69 submitted the following nomination for Editor of the Week:

I first ran into Plifal after seeing a flurry of expansions to the Only Yesterday (1991 film) article and being impressed by the high quality of work from a then-new editor. That was a year ago, and she has since quietly picked up her first good article (👁 Image
Jarinko Chie (film)) and her first featured article (👁 Image
High and Low (1963 film))! In addition to her work on film, she's also written a fair bit about Japanese history and culture, shedding light on its lesser-known aspects with an engaging encyclopedic angle. In interactions with other editors, she is unfailingly collegial and helpful, an invaluable skill on this project. I hope you'll join me in sharing your appreciation for this editor. Thank you for High and Low (1963 film), introduced: "The suspense is killing! This article is about the classic 1963 film High and Low by Akira Kurosawa. This is my first FAC, and my first major Wikipedia project. I started editing this article back in January/February of 2024, and have been scouring flea markets and book stores for any information on Kurosawa. literally signed up to start working on completely revamping Pastoral: To Die in the Country because i've seen your articles a few times and was fascinated with them, would love to talk japanese film but i neither speak it or live there lol. thanks for giving me the motivation to sign up and do something 9koyami (talk) 12:09, 2 March 2026 (UTC)[]

@9koyami, no, thank you!!! would i know you from outside wikipedia then?? if you'd like help with some of the policy stuff or locating sources, please don't hesitate to let me know! it'd be great to see more people working on japanese cinema articles! have you thought of joining the task force or the dedicated community project for cinema? both are a bit inactive, but can still serve as a useful hub of information and participants!--Plifal () 12:57, 2 March 2026 (UTC)[]
no, we don't know each other (i wish), but i saw + read through your high & low article while sifting through random featured ones a few months ago and it popped back into memory when it was front paged yesterday, then i went down the rabbit hole of seeing just how much kurosawa stuff you did and was like "damn"
i think otherwise all i'd really need are pointers on the quality of my writing and following the manual of style because i can only process so much of it at a time, hope i'm doing fine to start lmao
one thing i should ask for since i'm not autoconfirmed yet is if you can upload ->> https://imgur.com/a/3kly0pz <<-- this poster to replace pastoral's current one, because the one that's up right now isn't the primary theatrical poster 9koyami (talk) 13:09, 2 March 2026 (UTC)[]
@9koyami, i'll take a closer look at your work and upload the poster tomorrow, but at first glance it seems to be good! all i'd suggest is looking for high quality sources like books and academic articles first. usually you want those to be the backbone of your article, and there'll likely be a few things on the film specifically at least, as well as some stuff on the director's work and the film in genre context. take a look at MOS:FILM and follow the order in the contents box; as you work your way through an article just refer to the mos any time you're working on a new section, the broader formatting/writing stuff you'll just pick up over time.
although of course, my own contributions are pretty small when compared to others! take a look at the fantastic work of User:Chiswick Chap, User:Generalissima, ... just to name two!--Plifal () 13:29, 2 March 2026 (UTC)[]
i'm gonna go on a deep dive for actual academic/literary sources once i flesh out the article evenly because i know i can do better it's just significantly harder for me to be finding books without just resorting to 🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️
baby steps i guess btw thanks about the poster 9koyami (talk) 13:35, 2 March 2026 (UTC)[]
@9koyami, no worries! when you've had your account for six months you can use WP:TWL, but in the mean time if you don't want to resort to shadow libraries i suggest using google scholar, jstor, and the internet archive. all great resources and all free! there's also WP:RSX which can be used for any article or book chapter you may need, and so that you, in turn, can help others. i hope you enjoy your wikipedia journey! stay happy and humble and pay the kindnesses forward :) again, let me know if i can do anything to help!--Plifal () 13:46, 2 March 2026 (UTC)[]
i'll get the hang of grabbing resources i've just barely had to do it before but i at least know where to look
if i get as much a B class eventually i'm just gonna pretend i'm in the big leagues from then on out 9koyami (talk) 13:55, 2 March 2026 (UTC)[]
sounds good, i remember it feeling great too. i really appreciate the work you've already done, so thank you!!--Plifal () 14:00, 2 March 2026 (UTC)[]

about your advice

[edit]

few comments/questions on the changes you made to pastoral (thanks, by the way):

1) [in 2009, the magazine ranked Pastoral 44th on its retrospective list of the "200 Greatest Japanese Films of All Time".] < i got info completely mixed up. whoops. found an archived version of the article, CTRL + F for "田園に死す", and... 0 results. great! removed that.

2) [Rather than a conventional adaptation, Terayama incorporated several of the collection's poems verbatim into the script's dialogue and voiceover.] < this one was from CTRL + F'ing yoko kubo's paper, specifically on page 3: "また映画の中では寺山の第三歌集『田園に死す』(白玉書房、一九六五年)から引用された十四首の短歌が映像の間に映し出され、音読される。" (thanks, machine translation) i took this to mean verbatim, i might've just put the citation in the wrong spot since it works for the entire paragraph, so i moved it

3) [Domestically, however, the film has been distributed across various home media formats.] < i didn't really consider this, but store sites like tower, hmv, diskunion probably aren't allowed as resources, right? i remember checking if blu-ray.com was allowed and it wasn't, removed the mention unless i can find some more resources that specifically mention home video releases

4) [Terayama would recast Yachigusa twelve years later to reprise the role of the married woman, now unnamed, for the film.] < can't readily find anything which reasonably proves this, will remove

5) [featuring artwork by manga artist Kazuichi Hanawa, who also drew the film's alternative poster.] < sourced from japanese wikipedia... and it didn't have a source! but i added one

6) [Due to this in-house production, the film received only a limited domestic theatrical release.] < this might've just been a redundancy thing? "movie produced by a company, in japan, only for their theaters, so it's limited" i couldn't find anything that mentioned they were locked to the ATG circuit, either. removed

7) [(...) The score features sweeping choral arrangements and vocal performances by other members of the troupe.] < in hindsight i should've assumed discogs wouldn't be a viable source, but keeping until i can find a separate mention

anyways i did have a fixed plot written, but it doesn't really conform to filmplot as much as i'd like it to, so it probably deserves a rewrite (i checked out tampopo for reference and liked what it had there so i might do it like that?)

aside from that i'm pretty happy with starting back up by searching through literary resources, thanks for the bump up to start 9koyami (talk) 07:00, 3 March 2026 (UTC)[]

@9koyami, you're always welcome, any time! you're right about shopping pages, they're considered unreliable; as is discogs. i hate writing/re-writing a film's plot, it's always the least interesting thing to me, but it's also the thing most people read. the tampopo plot would be a good place to start and compare, but i guess the film-within-a-film of pastoral is more connective, so it'd be good to sub-section it as in the other side of the wind. my cite needed tags were just placed near sentences that i could see had no citation afterwards--it can be quite difficult because in academic citation (which is what i presume you're coming from) you cite the first time you reference an idea and can play around with it after that, whereas here every. single. word. needs to be before a citation saying exactly that (but also not exactly that because of WP:CLOP). i'm sure you knew all of this already, i'm just aware that it takes a little while to adjust. i think these are all good responses and i'm not opposed to any of them. hope your research continues to go well!!--Plifal () 08:11, 3 March 2026 (UTC)[]
just now learned how to read. figured out how to properly cite literary sources, if anything the current state of the article is a "first draft", so i'm gonna mess around in sandbox until i'm satisfied to push new edits. it'll look a lot better soon enough! thanks for your continued help 9koyami (talk) 08:20, 3 March 2026 (UTC)[]

sourcing advice request

[edit]

hi again, back with my daily talk page post (i should really find an easier way to do this)

i've been working my way through literary resources for the pastoral article and i've been having a trouble with sourcing a few:

  • Roland Domenig - Art Theatre Guild: Unabhängiges Japanisches Kino 1962-1984 [excerpts found online]
  • 宇田川岳夫 - J・A・シーザーの世界[完全版] “天井桟敷"から“ウテナ"まで、世界が認めた音楽家の軌跡 [can't find]
  • 堀江 秀史 - 寺山修司の一九六〇年代:不可分の精神 [only found as kindle edition on amazon.co.jp]

i cited the excerpts from an article about the first source that i was able to find, since it's supposed to be 1:1 with what's in the book, as [Domenig 2004], but wasn't sure whether or not that was the right call.

how do you suggest working around this? should the domenig reference be removed entirely? (it only holds up a couple minor claims, which i'll probably be able to find elsewhere)

if by some miracle you happen to find any of the sources outright, please let me know! thank you! 9koyami (talk) 02:05, 4 March 2026 (UTC)[]

hey @9koyami, no worries! without using shadow libraries you could try asking at WP:RSX. the doi for nihei masato's work can be found here which also contains a download link, it seems udagawa's book on j.a. seazer can be bought on amazon.jp, but at over £20 (not including shipping) it'll be a little pricey. the domenig book is specialist and out of print, you might be able to get it through a library exchange? if you live near any national or university libraries that might be a good place to check.--Plifal () 02:18, 4 March 2026 (UTC)[]
i'll probably see if it's worth biting the bullet on the two japanese books later down the line, but domenig's book probably already has all the relevant terayama info on midnight eye.
question: do you mainly use sources you can find through shadow libraries, and/or, since you live in japan, specialized sources you find through regional academic libraries? thank you for your advice! 9koyami (talk) 02:28, 4 March 2026 (UTC)[]
i use many different sources to help me in my research :) in the past i have used national and academic libraries regularly, now that i'm living in japan i don't use them as much, since it's more of a trip for a less certain outcome. sorry, didn't read or check the link i sent earlier btw, didn't even register it was a different author since i just searched the title, there might still be something you can glean from it though, i don't know. in general you'll have a harder time finding japanese books outside of japan (however shocking that might be)...--Plifal () 02:38, 4 March 2026 (UTC)[]
i'm likely gonna use that link if i find anything relevant, yeah. there's a few more questions i wanted to ask:
  • can i steal the thing you use to calculate japanese/yen inflation? i want to do that for the film budget & average contemporary costs i added
  • what's the best practice for formatting the bibliography sources like you do, with the ISBN layout & archive.org links especially, and is there a page for it? i might've missed it or gotten confused
  • since you're already working on funeral parade of roses, have you come across anything relevant to terayama & pastoral especially that isn't already in my bibliography? i saw funeral parade of roses mentioned a good amount in my sources

@9koyami, re. inflation template, yeah of course! for instances post-1970 though you shouldn't use the source i use but this rate inflation source, the correct formatting of which can be found at princess mononoke (1997). see also template:inflation. not quite sure what you mean by the second question, but have you checked out wp:citing sources and template:sfn? i've seen you've already begun using the latter, is there a specific question/issue you had? unfortunately i haven't really encountered anything on pastoral, but this article (also here) contains a comparison of one of terayama's early stage plays with funeral parade. i'd appreciate greatly if you could share anything you come across concerning funeral parade! feel free to email me by clicking the link on the tools section on the left hand side of my user page (your email address won't be visible unless you choose to respond).--Plifal () 03:09, 4 March 2026 (UTC)[]
to #1: thank you!
to #3: not sure if i can email you yet since i'm not autoconfirmed and you might have "Allow emails from brand-new users" turned off? if that's not the case i'll figure it out eventually + i get autoconfirmed soon anyway, but i'll send over anything relevant if i find it!
just to address what i meant by the second section, i meant, for example, hyphenating an ISBN like this:
  • 978-0810857957
  • 978-0-8108-5795-7
but wasn't sure what that was called. also, the archive.org thing referred to how you embed the link in directly, example:
now that i look at it i think i can just figure it out & bruteforce it to work
thanks again for your help! 9koyami (talk) 03:22, 4 March 2026 (UTC)[]
@9koyami, oh yeah, forgot. temporarily turned that feature off so feel free to go ahead! regarding the isbn, it doesn't matter how you do it so long as you do it the same for all references. if you hyphenate it it's normal to either do 978-0-810-85795-7 or 978-0-8108-5795-7, leaving it unhyphenated is also fine 9780810857957. incorporate the archive link to books using "|url=" in the source.--Plifal () 03:38, 4 March 2026 (UTC)[]

You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Seven Samurai), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to nominate it.
