Twenty-eight years have passed since that date but I cannot forget. My voice still trembles when I recount to someone, usually very rarely, that month and those days.
A whole generation has grown up since 1992 when the Babri Masjid was demolished, and the 1992-93 riots, which took place in various parts of the country, including Bombay, in its aftermath. But for many like us, it was a turning point for the city and for the nation.
For five days, from December 6 to 10 in 1992, and later from January 6 to 21 in 1993, Bombay was rocked by riots and violence which claimed 900 lives and left 2,036 persons injured.
According to the case, after the demolition of Babri Mosque in Ayodhya, riots broke out in different parts of the country, including Rajiv Nagar in Udhna, Surat, where vehicles were torched and shops were looted and set on fire.
The trial against Usman Mulla, now 52, who was arrested in February this year, began in June and saw the deposition of only one witness โ a police officer. However, the witness could not establish Mullaโs presence at the spot where the alleged incident took place on January 10, 1993.
The prosecution also submitted a list of witnesses to the defence, as directed by the court earlier. A list of 17 witnesses, including an eyewitness, was submitted.
