Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) BIOGRAPHY

Last Updated : 31 Jan 2025
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was founded in November 2012 by Arvind Kejriwal, emerging from the India Against Corruption movement led by activist Anna Hazare. The party aimed to combat corruption and promote transparency in governance. AAP’s symbol, the broom, signifies its commitment to “cleaning ...up” politics. AAP’s first major success came in the 2013 Delhi Legislative Assembly elections, where it won 28 out of 70 seats. Kejriwal became the Chief Minister but resigned after 49 days due to the failure to pass the Jan Lokpal Bill. In the 2015 Delhi elections, AAP made a remarkable comeback, winning 67 out of 70 seats, and Kejriwal resumed his role as Chief Minister. In 2020, AAP retained power in Delhi with another landslide victory, securing 62 seats. The party’s governance model, focusing on education, healthcare, and public services, received widespread acclaim1. AAP’s influence extended beyond Delhi, winning 20 seats in the 2022 Punjab Legislative Assembly elections, forming the government there. However, AAP faced challenges, including allegations of corruption and internal conflicts. In 2023, Kejriwal was arrested on corruption charges related to the liquor policy, leading to his resignation in September 2024. Atishi, a prominent AAP leader, succeeded him as Delhi’s Chief Minister. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, AAP formed an alliance with Congress in Delhi but failed to win any seats, despite increasing its vote share. The party managed to secure three seats in Punjab, reflecting its growing but still limited national presence. AAP’s journey has been marked by significant achievements and challenges. Its focus on grassroots issues and governance reforms has resonated with many voters, but allegations of corruption and political setbacks have tested its resilience.
