Punjab's Mandeep Singh first grabbed the spotlight after putting on a good performance for India in the Under-19 World Cup in 2010. Singh's consistent performance with the bat saw him becoming one of the top scorers of the competition for his side. After the World Cup stint, Singh found himself becoming a regular for his home state of Punjab in the domestic competitions. His impressive showing in Ranji competitions earned him a call in the IPL in 2010 when he was first bought by Kolkata Knight Riders. But his best performance came for Kings XI Punjab in 2012 after he became the highest run-getter for the franchise and also won the 'Rising Star of the tournament' award. In 70 IPL matches, he has scored 1,112 runs at an average of 20.22 at a strike rate of 120.87 in the first 10 seasons of the tournament.
Mandeep Singh was an integral player in India's back-to-back bronze medal-winning squads at the Olympic Games, while Udita was part of the famous fourth-placed women's team in Tokyo.
He had missed most of Punjab's matches in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy because of dengue, which was followed by a poor Vijay Hazare Trophy after which he tested positive for Covid-19 .
The premier domestic first-class tournament is back after a one-year hiatus. The Indian Express provides a snapshot of a few who canโt wait for it to resume.
"I was moved by seeing elders and farmers protesting at the Delhi borders and hence I decided to support them. Farmers have hearts of lions and have been protesting peacefully against the farm bills and I only wish that their demands are met as soon as possible...," said Mandeep.
