Marco Rubio BIOGRAPHY

Last Updated : 11 Feb 2025
Marco Rubio: From Florida Politics to US Secretary of State Born May 28, 1971, Marco Rubio's political career began with his election to the Florida House of Representatives in 2000. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming Speaker of the House in 2006. After a stint teaching at Florida Internati...onal University, he successfully ran for the US Senate in 2010. Rubio's Senate career was marked by a 2016 presidential bid, ultimately unsuccessful against Donald Trump. Despite initial criticisms of Trump, Rubio later endorsed him and became a vocal supporter. His expertise on Latin American policy earned him the moniker of "virtual secretary of state for Latin America" during the first Trump administration. A known hawk on China, Rubio faced sanctions from the Chinese government. Re-elected to the Senate in 2022, he again endorsed Trump in 2024. In a significant development, President-elect Trump nominated Rubio as Secretary of State in November 2024. Confirmed unanimously by the Senate, Rubio assumed office on January 21, 2025, becoming the first Hispanic and Floridian to hold the position. His policy stances reflect a generally conservative Republican platform, with a strong focus on foreign policy and national security. His key contributions include shaping US policy towards Latin America and a consistently assertive stance against China.
