Puri said India has diversified its oil import routes with dependence on the Hormuz channel sharply down. The share of non-Hormuz crude imports has increased to 70 per cent of the total, Puri told Parliament, underlining the country’s current crude supply position as secure.

Amid the energy crisis caused by the ongoing conflict in West Asia, officials from the Food and Civil Supplies Department seized 46 LPG cylinders allegedly being used for commercial purposes rather than household cooking in Yadgiri.
Authorities said such use violates the Essential Commodities Act, which was enforced this week, and the LPG supply rules.
The Bengaluru City police have also stepped up inspections across the city to prevent stockpiling and black-market sale of LPG cylinders.
The cost of domestic LPG cylinders (14.2 Kg) and commercial cylinders (19 Kg) have soared by Rs 60 and Rs 144 across several cities.

Patna recorded the highest LPG prices with ₹1,002.50 for domestic cylinders and ₹2,133.50 for commercial.
Among states, Tripura recorded the highest price on Friday at ₹1,073.50 for domestic cylinders and ₹2,345.50 for commercial.
Abhyuday Jindal, MD of Jindal Stainless, said the conflict in West Asia has affected stainless steel manufacturing due to the industry's dependence on propane and natural gas supply.
“Due to the heavy dependence of stainless steel manufacturing on industrial gases such as propane/ LPG and natural gas, several processes across our plants have been adversely impacted. Unlike conventional steel industry, which largely utilises blast furnace and coke oven gases as energy sources, the stainless steel industry follows the scrap-based production route where such gases are not generated internally. Given the constraints in fuel availability, our plants are operating at a rationalised capacity," Jindal said.
"Additionally, disruptions in global shipping routes are resulting in vessel diversions, longer transit times, and cargo delays, which are also placing additional pressure on supply chains and margins," he added.
"We appreciate that the Government is fully seized of the matter and is actively prioritising fuel allocation for critical sectors. Clarity on the allocation percentage for industrial propane/LPG and natural gas, along with assurance of regular supplies, will be important for the stainless steel industry to plan and optimise operations. In the absence of such clarity, we foresee a cascading effect across the industry, the severity of which will depend on how quickly these issues are resolved," he remarked.

Amid concerns over reported LPG shortage in the state, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Friday said that new domestic gas cylinders will be delivered after a waiting period of 25 days following online booking.
Speaking after chairing a high-level meeting to review the situation, Sawant said the state government has assessed the availability and distribution of gas supplies and will follow the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas to manage the current shortage.
"I chaired a high-level meeting on gas shortage and took stock of the situation. In Goa, a new domestic cylinder will be delivered 25 days after online booking," the Chief Minister said. — ANI

TMC leader June Malia said, “We all know that there is a major LPG crisis. Many restaurants have been shut down because of this crisis. We are not making this up. As various parts of the country report a shortage of commercial LPG supply in the wake of the West Asia conflict, Hyderabad has also been hit by a similar crisis. Hence, to maintain their daily operations, tiffin centres across the city are increasingly turning to electric stoves to prepare their dishes.
Highlighting the severity of the situation, Raj Kumar, a chef at Devi Nashta Point, stated that there is a massive shortage of LPG in the city. He claimed that even at inflated rates of 3,000-4,000 rupees, cylinders remain unavailable. — ANI

Congress workers staged a protest outside the Indian National Congress headquarters in Delhi on Friday over the alleged shortage of LPG cylinders, demanding the resignation of Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri.
The demonstrators accused the Centre of failing to ensure an adequate supply of cooking gas and misleading the public about the situation.
During the protest, party workers set up a makeshift chulha (traditional stove) and prepared tea as a symbolic demonstration, raising slogans against the government and highlighting the difficulties faced by households due to the reported shortage. — ANI

The Trinamool Congress (TMC), along with other opposition MPs, staged a protest at Makar Dwar on the Parliament premises over the shortage of LPG cylinders across the country on Thursday.
The protesters reportedly shouted "LPG, LPG" to highlight the crisis. Additionally, some opposition MPs raised concerns regarding Indian nationals stranded in Middle Eastern countries, chanting the slogan, "Qatar main Khade Hindustan, Modi Ghume Cheen Japan." Congress MP Sukhdeo Bhagat on Friday demanded an all-party meeting to discuss the concerns over India's energy security amid the ongoing conflict in West Asia and the hampering of trade routes in the Strait of Hormuz.
Backing Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi's statement in Parliament, Sukhdeo Bhagat said that the reported LPG shortage is not a party-specific issue and urged the Centre to take the public into confidence.

An LPG shortage is forcing around 40 per cent of restaurants in Kerala to shut down as many establishments are unable to switch to alternative cooking methods, industry representatives said.
Apart from restaurants, caterers, hostels, canteens and crematoriums have also been affected by the LPG shortage following the conflict in West Asia.
G Jayapal, president of the Kerala Hotel and Restaurant Association (KHRA), told PTI that by Friday around 40 per cent of restaurants in the state would shut down.
"Till Thursday, around 20 per cent of restaurants had closed. The number will increase to 40 per cent by Friday as LPG stocks will run out soon," he said. — PTI
Two persons were arrested and detained under the Goondas Act in Madurai for allegedly hoarding 398 LPG cylinders for black marketing, marking the first time such stringent action has been taken in Tamil Nadu for cylinder hoarding, police said on Friday.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Petroleum Dealers' Association urged people not to panic-buy petrol or diesel, stating that 14 terminals in Tamil Nadu have enough stock to replenish 7,000-plus retail outlets as per their demand.
The arrests in Madurai followed a tip-off received by the Civil Supplies Criminal Investigation Department (CS-CID) regarding the illegal diversion of subsidised domestic gas cylinders for commercial use. — PTI
The Maharashtra government said it has set up control rooms and district-level committees to ensure uninterrupted supply of LPG amid the West Asia crisis, asserting that there is no shortage of the fuel for domestic consumers.
An official release issued on Thursday said Anil Diggikar, Additional Chief Secretary of the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection Department, has directed authorities to take necessary steps to maintain smooth supply and closely monitor LPG distribution across the state.

A high-level meeting chaired by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has decided to take urgent steps to address the shortage of LPG cylinders meant for non-domestic use in the state.
The meeting decided to request the central government to increase the quota of non-domestic LPG cylinders allotted to the state. At present, the limit for such cylinders is 20 per cent. “There is no shortage of petrol, diesel, kerosene, ATF or fuel oil. The availability of petrol, diesel, aviation and fuel oil is fully assured,” Puri said in the Lok Sabha, adding that the panic on LPG gas was driven by “consumer anxiety”.

“External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Foreign Minister of Iran Seyed Abbas Araghchi have had three conversations in the last few days. The last one discussed issues pertaining to safety of shipping and India’s energy security. Beyond that, it would be premature for me to say anything,” Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, said Thursday.

Amid reports of LPG shortage despite the government maintaining that India has adequate stocks of essential fuels such as petrol and diesel despite the US-Iran-Israel war, PM Modi has made his first statement on the issue.
We are taking steps at various levels and I have spoken to several leaders of countries," he said.
"We are continuously trying to overcome the challenges of supply chain disruption that have come. For the fast growth of the country, it is important that different energy sources have to promoted and for this we have worked on two levels.
Firstly, we created infrastructure and secondly to not stay dependent on other countries we have focussed on self reliance in energy sector," PM Modi added.
PM Modi has also talked about how "no country has left untouched by this agenda".
"There is a lot of discussion going on LPG these days. There are many people who are trying to create panic. They want to run their agenda. I don't want to make political comment on them. But I would definitely say this that they are not only exposing themselves in front of the people but they are also doing a big loss to the damage ('bada nuksaan'). The crisis that has come due to this war, there is no country that is untouched by it. Some less some more, everyone is facing this crisis and India will leave no stone unturned to deal with this crisis."
PM Modi has compared the fallout of the current crisis — with an ongoing war between US, Israel on one side and Iran on the other — with the Covid crisis.
He said: "The war has pushed the world into an energy crisis. At these times it is important as to how we handle this challenge. We have to handle these situations and we have to show patience. Every one has a role in these situations and we have seen at times of Corona that when everyone walks together then the countries capacity increases multifold."
Speaking at the NXT Summit, PM Narendra Modi talked about his government's efforts towards capacity building in the petrol-diesel sector.
"Before 2014, India had almost no strategic petroleum reserves—the capacity to store crude oil in times of crisis. Today, we have a strategic petroleum reserve of over 50 lakh tons, and work is underway to build even more capacity. Over the past decade, we have increased our refining capacity by over 40 million tons annually. That's why India has become one of the world's largest refining hubs. You can imagine the scale and breadth of work we are doing to make India self-reliant. We will certainly overcome this crisis caused by the war. I have full faith in my 140 crore countrymen. Just as we pulled the country out of the COVID crisis by uniting together, we will overcome this global crisis as well... The public interest will be paramount in every decision we make."
India currently depends on imports for a bulk of its crude oil needs.

The prime minister also said that everyone has a key role to play in dealing with the present crisis arising out of the conflict in West Asia "be it political parties, media, youth, cities or villages".
Despite many global crises, world leaders and experts look to India with great hope, which raises India's responsibilities too, Modi said.

Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) has assured consumers of uninterrupted supply of Piped Natural Gas (PNG) for household cooking and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) for vehicles amid global energy market disruptions caused by the escalating conflict in the Middle East.
The assurance comes following the Natural Gas (Supply Regulation) Order, 2026, dated March 9, 2026, under which the supply of natural gas to Domestic PNG and CNG has been classified as the topmost priority sector.
In a statement, the company said that it remains committed to ensuring uninterrupted supply of natural gas forhouseholds and transport services in line with the government mandate. — ANI

Long queues of motorists were seen outside petrol stations across Tamil Nadu on Thursday as panic buying took hold of several cities, triggered by a worsening shortage of commercial LPG that has already forced numerous eateries to shut down or drastically reduce their menus.
While oil marketing companies and state government officials have repeatedly assured the public that there is no shortage of petrol or diesel, the sight of dry outlets in the commercial gas sector has sparked widespread anxiety.
Residents in Chennai, Coimbatore, and Madurai reported waiting for over 45 minutes to fill their vehicle tanks, with some carrying additional containers despite regulations against the practice. — PTI
Assam Police on Thursday said strict action will be taken against all those spreading rumours regarding shortages of LPG and other fuels, a day after the chief secretary's assertion that local refineries can meet only about 30 per cent of the state's demand for the cooking fuel.
In a post on X, Assam Police said: "Strict legal action will be taken against anyone trying to spread rumours about shortages of LPG, POL and other petroleum products." Citizens are advised not to believe or forward any such misleading claims that may be spread by "inimical elements" to try and create confusion, it added.
The government has already formed a dedicated media monitoring committee to track rumours, misinformation and misleading reports that may create panic among consumers. — PTI

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said there is no crisis of LPG cylinders in the state.
Speaking to reporters here, Sarma said that the state government is monitoring the situation arising across the country on the backdrop of the war in West Asia.

The Uttarakhand government has decided to provide commercial gas cylinders to hospitals and educational institutions on a priority basis amid fears of a possible disruption in gas supply due to conflict in West Asia.
The government has also begun preparations to provide wood for commercial use if needed, but asserted that there was no shortage of gas cylinders in the state.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said the global energy supply chain has been affected due to the conflict in West Asia and appealed to the people to not panic, expressing confidence of overcoming the crisis.
Amid shortage in LPG supplies and opposition accusing the Centre of "failing" to prepare for disruptions in energy supplies, the prime minister said the government always puts the interests of Indians above everything.
Addressing a NDA rally, Modi said: Today, I would like to speak to the people of Tamil Nadu about the conflict in West Asia. It has affected the whole world's energy supply chain. We believe in the ideology of India first.
Amid panic buying in some parts of the country, the government on Wednesday said India has enough LPG stocks to fully meet household cooking gas requirements, even as it stepped up efforts to secure alternative supplies to replace volumes disrupted by the West Asia conflict.
While India has been able to source additional crude oil - the raw material for fuels such as petrol and diesel - from alternative suppliers to offset disruptions caused by the blockage of the Strait of Hormuz, refinery adjustments have lifted domestic LPG output by about 25 per cent.
The push to secure supplies has also resulted in securing at least two LNG cargoes, Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, said.

The Maharashtra Opposition parties raked up the issue of LPG supplies in the state legislature on Wednesday.
Opposition members asked the government to explain steps being taken, including measures to curb black-marketing.
Congress legislature party leader Vijay Wadettiwar said that a "severe" shortage of cooking gas has created fear and anxiety among households across the state.
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Wednesday reviewed the fuel supply situation in the state. He chaired a meeting with senior officers of the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department to discuss cooking gas and fuel supply across the state.
What oil companies said
During the meeting, officials said the petrol, diesel and domestic LPG supply is currently flowing normally. They assured that adequate stock is available with the firms.
Officials said the Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas issued necessary directions on March 9 to ensure the supply of domestic LPG to priority sectors, and to maintain its availability and proper distribution.

Former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Wednesday urged people to use fuel cautiously.
This appeal comes amid a widening Gulf conflict that has birthed a LPG crisis at home in India.
"The deepening crisis over the supply of cooking gas (LPG) in the country due to the war in Gulf nations is extremely worrying. It is unfortunate that the Modi government, as always, remains careless and insensitive even regarding this potential national crisis," Gehlot said.
Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan has sounded alarm afte an LPG crunch, which has affected the state.
"With eateries on the brink of closure, livelihoods and food security are under threat. Recent price hikes and the restrictive 27-day domestic cylinder booking interval compound this. This predicament demands immediate attention as it cripples small businesses and burdens the common man in Kerala during Ramadan," Vijayan posted on X.
He has demanded that the Union govt intervene "urgently" to stabilise supply, revise restrictive policies, and provide relief to the millions affected.

This is because of the reported shortage of liquefied petroleum gas after the supply of crude oil was affected.

It is not just the kitchens that are shuttering down after an LPG crunch. The shortage is even stalling operations at Mumbai’s iconic Dhobi Ghat.
The 136-year-old Mahalaxmi Dhobi Ghat, which is the world’s largest open-air laundromat.
Even beyond and across the city, LPG cylinders are used to dry the machines used by dhobis. But a scarcity has slowed down even those operations.
Many are forced to look for cylinders in the black market at inflated rates.
