⇱ MS Dhoni reunited with 2011 ODI World Cup trophy in Mumbai ahead of MI vs CSK | Ipl News - The Indian Express

The last Indian captain to lift the ODI World Cup trophy, MS Dhoni reunited with the prized possession on Saturday at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) headquarters in Mumbai.

The BCCI shared a photo of the former Indian skipper touching the replica with the 2011 Cricket World Cup logo inscribed on it, captioned, “Made for each other.” Placed beside the replica from the 2011 edition was the old Prudential Cup from India’s 1983 edition win. While the original ODI World Cup trophy is placed in the ICC headquarters at Dubai, each winning side is given a replica.

Dhoni is in Mumbai alongside his Chennai Super Kings teammates for the high-octane clash against Mumbai Indians on Sunday evening at the Wankhede Stadium, the venue where he hit the winning six to see to conclusion India’s last World Cup win at home.

Last year, during the IPL, the Mumbai Cricket Association had decided to name the seat where Dhoni’s winning six from the 2011 final landed after the-then Indian skipper. Ahead of the MI-CSK game at the Wankhede, Dhoni was in attendance for the ceremony himself.

This year though, the five-time IPL winning captain has arrived to the city after having relinquished his role as captain. Stepping in his stead, Ruturaj Gaikwad has captained CSK to three wins in five games. As it happens though, the defending champions are yet to register a win away from home in the ongoing season – having lost both their away games to Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Five-time champions themselves, Mumbai Indians on the other hand, have won back-to-back games at home – against Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bangalore. Having started off with three defeats in a row under the captainship of Hardik Pandya, Mumbai have bounced back with consecutive wins.

Mumbai also hold a slight advantage in the head-to-head column against CSK, having won 20 off the 36 games the two have played against each other. Although, last season, it was CSK who had emerged victorious on both occasions against MI.
