Authorities at the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) considered putting Jeffrey Epstein in the same cell with a Donald Trump supporter who is currently serving a 20-year sentence for sending pipe bombs to prominent Democrats, newly released Department of Justice documents showed.
Epstein was held at the MCC in Manhattan for 36 days following his July 6, 2019, arrest on federal sex trafficking charges until his suspicious death on August 10 while awaiting trial.
In an email dated July 24, federal jail officials discussed placing Epstein in the Special Housing Unit with an inmate whose name has been redacted.
However, the description of the charges against the inmate whose name has been redacted suggests that the officials were talking about Cesar Sayoc.
Sayoc, a former pizza delivery driver from Florida, was arrested in October 2018, on charges of mailing 16 pipe bombs to prominent Democrats who were critical of Trump, including Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, former CIA director John Brennan, senator Cory Booker, actor Robert De Niro, and to the office of CNN.
In August 2019, Sayoc was found guilty and sentenced to 20 years in jail.
According to the email, “He (Epstein) has a pending incident report for Self-Mutilation and therefore, he will return to the Special Housing Unit (SHU) and will be celled with inmate (name redacted)”.
Epstein was found dead inside his cell on August 10, four days after Sayoc was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment. CNN, which first reported the email, said it was unclear if the two ever shared a cell.
Epstein was placed on a 24-hour suicide watch and was housed in a cell with an inmate called Efrain Reyes from July 30. Reyes was transferred out of the facility on August 9, the day before Epstein’s death.
