The US has sought to expand exports of LNG across Asia. It burns cleaner than coal, but still emits climate change-causing gases, especially methane.

Israel's war in Lebanon is a pressing concern, driven by a desire to annihilate Hezbollah. Prime Minister Netanyahu faces elections in October and needs a significant win to boost his popularity.

Both Trump and Netanyahu knew from intelligence briefings earlier in the week that Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and his key lieutenants would soon meet at his compound in Tehran, making them vulnerable to a “decapitation strike,” an attack against a country's top leaders often used by Israelis but traditionally less so by the United States.

Israel's military has launched an early morning "wide scale" airstrike on sites across Iran's capital Tehran.
Blasts were reported across the city by Iranian state media, including IRGC-aligned Fars news agency.
"Terrible sounds of explosions have been reported," Fars wrote.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) says it is targeting "terrorist infrastructure" in Tehran.
An airstrike on Khorramabad, west of Tehran, has killed at least one child and wounded several others, according to Fars news agency.
Rescue workers and residents are digging through the rubble of a destroyed residential building, with reports of an elderly woman trapped. The attack has left multiple buildings damaged, with the exact number of casualties unclear.
The Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) says emergency personnel are at the site of a residential area that was destroyed in an air attack in northwestern Urmia, near the borders of Turkiye and Iraq.
Footage posted by the group shows a building with its walls and windows blown out and rescue workers combing through the debris.
IRCS said relief workers were providing aid to “injured compatriots”.
It was not immediately clear how many people were wounded.

The US is responding to attacks on its sites by activating its C-RAM air defense system, intercepting drone attacks on Victory Base, and conducting air strikes on Iran-backed militias in Iraq.
They're also temporarily evacuating American-NATO forces from Victory Base, 20km west of Baghdad, while maintaining positions in Iraq's north, particularly in Kurdish regions.
Meanwhile, Kataib Hezbollah, an Iran-backed militia, has given the US a 5-day ultimatum to evacuate the US embassy in Baghdad's Green Zone or face attacks, escalating tensions in the region.
The Israeli military has issued a statement moments ago announcing a “wave of extensive strikes targeting” Iran government infrastructure in Tehran.
This came shortly after reports of powerful explosions across the Iranian capital.

South Korean shares tumbled on Monday on heightening geopolitical conflict in the Middle East, with the won hitting 17-year lows.
US President Donald Trump and Iran threatened to escalate their war by attacking energy facilities in the Gulf, a potential widening of hostilities which could deepen a regional crisis and add to concerns in global markets.
The benchmark KOSPI fell 289.24 points, or 5%, to 5,491.96 as of 0131 GMT, extending losses even after a trading curb was activated on the index earlier in the session.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun is calling Israel’s latest attacks on his country as a “collective punishment” on Lebanese civilians.

Chuck Schumer, the US Senate’s minority leader, has called for an end to the US military operation against Iran.
“Enough is enough. End this war,” Schumer wrote in a statement posted on X.
“Even some Republican Senators are openly admitting they have no clue what the Administration is trying to accomplish in the Middle East,” the lawmaker from New York added.
In an earlier post on X, Schumer also noted that tens of billions of dollars “are being wasted” in the conduct of the war against Iran, resulting in a gallon of gas now costs “an average of $3.94”.

Iran's message is loud and clear: they're gearing up for retaliation against US interests and Israel if their power plants are targeted.
The military, politicians, and diplomats are all on the same page, with statements from the Iranian military spokesperson, Parliament speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, and Foreign Minister Abbas Araqhchi indicating a unified stance.
They're leveraging their control over the Strait of Hormuz to disrupt energy markets and pressure the US to back down. And with Yemen's Houthis potentially joining the fray, things could get even more complicated.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is holding an emergency COBRA meeting today to address the economic fallout from the US-Israeli war on Iran. The meeting will be attended by key officials, including Finance Minister Rachel Reeves, Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey, Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, and Energy Secretary Ed Miliband. They're set to discuss the impact on families, businesses, energy security, and supply chains, as well as the international response.
The UK's reliance on imported natural gas makes it vulnerable to price hikes, and energy prices are expected to rise again this week, with no signs of the conflict easing. This has pushed inflation concerns to the forefront, with some economists predicting a jump to 5% .
Japan's Nikkei share average fell 4% on Monday as concerns about escalation of the Middle East war stoked inflation fears and the potential for higher interest rates globally.

Explosions have been reported in eastern Tehran, with no immediate information on casualties or damage. The Iranian capital has been experiencing a series of attacks amidst escalating tensions with Israel and the US.
The United States and Iran threatened to target critical infrastructure Sunday as the war in the Middle East, now in its fourth week, puts lives and livelihoods at risk throughout the region.Iran said the Strait of Hormuz, crucial to oil and other exports, would be "completely closed” immediately if the US follows up on President Donald Trump's threat to attack its power plants.
At least one person was killed in an airstrike on a radio station in Iran's Gulf port of Bandar Abbas, according to the semi-official Mehr News Agency.
The US state department has issued a warning for American citizens around the globe to be more cautious amid the Iran war.
The department POsted on X: "Worldwide Caution: The Department of State advises Americans worldwide, and especially in the Middle East, to exercise increased caution.
It also said: "US diplomatic facilities, including outside the Middle East, have been targeted.
Groups supportive of Iran may target other US interests overseas or locations associated with the United States and/or Americans throughout the world.
The state department added that periodic airspace closures might cause travel disruptions and that Americans abroad should follow the guidance in security alerts issued by the nearest US embassy or consulate.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is set to chair an emergency meeting on the economic fallout from the war in Iran on Monday, with finance minister Rachel Reeves and Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey in attendance, the government said.
Investors are bracing for another stormy week in financial markets after Iran said it would strike the energy and water systems of Gulf neighbours if US President Donald Trump follows through with a threat to hit Iran's electricity grid.
Oil prices were little moved on Monday as investors weighed U.S. and Iranian threats to target energy facilities that could escalate the war against the release of millions of barrels of Iranian oil at sea to global markets after Washington lifted sanctions.
Brent crude futures dropped 8 cents to $112.11 a barrel by 2324 GMT after settling at the highest since July 2022 on Friday.

Iran said on Sunday it would strike the energy and water systems of its Gulf neighbours in retaliation if US President Donald Trump follows through with a threat delivered a day earlier to hit Iran's electricity grid in 48 hours, escalating the three-week-old war.
The prospect of tit-for-tat strikes on civilian infrastructure could further rattle global markets when they reopen on Monday morning, and threaten the livelihoods of millions of civilians in the region who rely almost exclusively in some cases on desalination plants for water.
After more than three weeks of heavy US and Israeli bombardment that officials say has sharply reduced Iran's missile capabilities, Tehran continues to demonstrate the ability to carry out attacks. Air raid sirens sounded across parts of northern and central Israel, including in Tel Aviv, and the occupied West Bank overnight on Sunday, warning of incoming missiles from Iran.
Earlier today, US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz told CBS's Face the Nation that no option is "off the table" when it comes to Iran - including bombing a nuclear power plant.
Asked about Trump's threat to "obliterate" Iran's energy infrastructure, Waltz says: "Well, I would never take anything off the table for the president, certainly not on national television.
"I think the important point here is to understand the IRGC, a declared terrorist organisation, not only by us but in a number of European countries, controls a huge swath of Iran's critical infrastructure, their economy and certainly many of their governing institutions.
"And so to the extent we are degrading their military capability and their defence industrial base, all options should be on the table, and the president has made that very clear."
The US State Department has issued an updated caution to Americans across the world due to the ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
Writing on X, the department calls on Americans "worldwide, and especially in the Middle East, to exercise increased caution".
"Periodic airspace closures may cause travel disruptions. US diplomatic facilities, including outside the Middle East, have been targeted," it says.
"Groups supportive of Iran may target other US interests overseas or locations associated with the United States and/or Americans throughout the world."
Oil prices have risen in early trading.
The price of West Texas Intermediate (WTI), the US benchmark crude, for May delivery rose 1.78 percent to $100.10 per barrel.
Meanwhile, North Sea Brent crude climbed 1.73 percent to $113.44 per barrel, minutes after the market opened on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.
Falling shrapnel has been reported in several locations across southern and central Israel after another round of Iranian missile attacks.
There are also reports of damage caused by cluster munitions.
There were no immediate reports of casualties.
Oil prices spiked on Sunday as Iran threatened to indefinitely shut down the Strait of Hormuz, a critical oil shipping route, in response to President Donald Trump's ultimatum to restore oil traffic. Brent crude rose 1.69% to around $114.09 a barrel, while US crude jumped 2% to $100.29.
Goldman Sachs predicts elevated prices could last through 2027. The conflict has already disrupted global oil markets, with the strait effectively closed, impacting 20% of the world's oil supply.
Pope Leo on Sunday said death and suffering caused by the war in the Middle East are a “scandal to the whole human family”, as he once again pleaded for an immediate ceasefire.
As the US-Israeli war on Iran enters its fourth week, the first U.S. pope said that he continues to follow with “dismay” the situation in the Middle East and in other regions torn apart by war and violence.
“We cannot remain silent in the face of the suffering of so many people, the defenceless victims of these conflicts. What hurts them hurts the whole of humanity,” Leo said at his weekly Angelus prayer in St. Peter’s Square.
“I strongly renew my appeal for us to persevere in prayer, so that hostilities may cease and the way may finally be paved for peace,” he added.
The Iraqi armed group Kataib Hezbollah has stated it will extend the suspension of its attacks on the US embassy in Baghdad for an additional five days.

A Downing Street spokesperson says: “The leaders discussed the current situation in the Middle East, and in particular, the need to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to resume global shipping.
“They agreed that reopening the Strait of Hormuz was essential to ensure stability in the global energy market.
“They agreed to speak again soon.”
North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) Secretary General Mark Rutte on Sunday said that he is “absolutely convinced” that the western military alliance will be able to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
In an interview with Fox News, Rutte said, "European allies and partners all over the world have used the last couple of weeks to make sure that we come together. They start planning to see what we can do collectively as allies, as partners of the United States."

US-Israel vs Iran War News Live Updates: A British nuclear-powered submarine, HMS Anson, equipped with Tomahawk cruise missiles and Spearfish torpedoes has reportedly moved into the Arabian Sea, according to the Daily Mail. The deployment could enable long-range strikes if regional conflict escalates, though Reuters has not independently verified the report and the UK Ministry of Defence has not commented.
The submarine travelled about 5500 miles from Perth and maintains communication with UK military command in Northwood, where any strike would require prime ministerial authorisation. The move follows Britain’s approval for the US to use its bases for potential strikes on Iranian targets linked to tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.
US-Israel vs Iran War News Live Updates: Iranian Deputy Defence Minister Reza Talaei-Nik rejected US claims that Tehran’s military has been weakened, asserting that continued regional attacks demonstrate sustained operational strength. He said long-term investments in domestic weapons production, particularly missiles and drones, have enabled the IRGC to carry out increasingly precise strikes. Talaei-Nik also claimed Iran effectively controls security in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy route, according to Al Jazeera.
US-Israel vs Iran War News Live Updates: Japan has indicated it could consider deploying its Self-Defense Forces for minesweeping in the Strait of Hormuz, but only if a full ceasefire is reached in the ongoing US-Israel-Iran situation. Under its pacifist constitution, Japan’s military role is restricted, though 2015 security laws allow overseas deployment in situations threatening national survival. With nearly 90% of its oil passing through the strait, Tokyo has emphasised the need to ensure safe navigation, even as Iran has largely restricted access during the conflict, Reuters reported.
