Over the last few years, avocados have become extremely popular. However, most people in a hurry to whip up avocado toast tend to suffer from a specific type of injury. According to experts, this injuryโaptly named 'avocado hand'โfrequently occurs when someone accidentally cuts their hand while slicing open the fruit. (Photo: Freepik)

"This happens when the knife slips and cuts deep into the hand, possibly injuring a tendon, artery, or nerve," said Dr Rakesh Nair, consultant knee replacement surgeon, Zen Multispeciality Hospital, Chembur. (Photo: Getty Images/Thinkstock)

If this happens, act quickly. First, wash the wound gently with clean water to remove dirt. "If there is bleeding, apply firm pressure with a clean cloth or bandage to stop it. Raise your hand above heart level to reduce bleeding," said Dr Nair. (Photo: Unsplash)

"These may be signs of nerve, tendon, or artery damage. In such cases, go to the nearest hospital immediately. Avoid applying home remedies like turmeric, toothpaste, or oil, as they can cause infection. Cover the wound with a clean dressing and keep it still until you get medical help," said Dr Nair. To prevent such injuries, always cut the avocado on a stable surface, not in your hand, and use a sharp knife carefully. "Early treatment can prevent long-term damage and help you recover faster. So, next time, stay alert while cutting an avocado and prevent serious hand injuries," said Dr Nair. (Photo: Freepik)

Dr Anup Khatri, senior consultant, orthopedics, Gleneagles Hospital, Parel, Mumbai said one should keep fingers tucked in to protect joints and soft tissues. "Use sharp knives to reduce excess force, which can cause slips and deeper injuries." (Photo: Freepik)

Dr Khatri also noted that one should avoid cutting hard foods with improper technique, as this may lead to fractures or ligament strain. "In case of a deep cut, donโt ignore it, early medical care can prevent long-term stiffness, loss of movement, or impaired hand function," said Dr Khatri. (Photo: Freepik)
