The golden langur is an endangered species endemic to Western Assam and Bhutan. According to a population estimate released last year, there are 7,396 golden langurs in India, of which officials say 500-600 are in the Kakoijana Reserve Forest.
The population includes 3,044 adults, 1,042 sub-adults, 717 juveniles and 1,025 calves. The estimation was conducted in all 43 forest divisions in Assam.

NIA officials, led by DIG, arrived in Malda to investigate the harassment of seven judicial officers. They were accompanied by 60 Army jawans and NIA IG Sonia Singh also landed in Kolkata. The incident occurred when judicial officers were held hostage by protesting residents. The SC transferred the probe to NIA and the team visited the BDO office and Mothabari police station for evidence.
