I'm exploring glitched multi chests in Xbox 360 Edition which as a proxy relates directly to Bonus Chests due to them being instrumental in their creation. This has led to me discovering some undocumented changes to the bonus chest over time. This includes how TU31 causes them to no longer regenerate when they are broken. Before this update, breaking a Bonus Chest and then leaving and rejoining the world would cause it to regenerate. As well as this, bonus chests were changed at some point to be given the name of Bonus Chest, so that it shows up in the UI. I've yet to be able to determine exactly when this change was made, but I'll circle back when I figure it
