Strays and Creepers

[edit source]

Does anyone know if creepers drop music disks when killed by stray's arrows?

Arrow of Slowness drop

Am I right? There's a 1/3 chance that the dropped arrow number is generated, and a 1/2 chance that this generated number is 1 (otherwise it's 0)? And thus strays have an actual chance of 1/6 to drop the arrow? The current drop description seems rather confusing to me. --AttemptToCallNil, previously known as GreenStone (report bug, view backtrace) 12:17, 19 May 2016 (UTC)

Looks completely wrong to me. The loot table says "0–2 arrows, +0–1 per level of looting. 0–2 bones, +0–1 per level of looting. 0–1 tipped arrows when killed by the player, +0–1 per level of looting but max 1 total." So the effective drop is a 12 chance of getting a tipped arrow, with Looting increasing that to 2×level+12×level+2. Anomie x (talk) 13:07, 19 May 2016 (UTC)

Yes, an arrow from a stray that kills a creeper make the latter drop a music disc. TheGreatSpring (talk | contribs) (Tagalog translation) 11:01, 11 March 2021 (UTC)

Unresolved

Add render of a stray without the second layer, like the bogged's page.

No y-level restriction when spawning in the java edition?

The spawning section currently saids:

A stray may spawn directly under the sky at Y coordinates 60-66 in snowy plains, or ice spikes, replacing 80% of skeletons.

I've checked the code in:

  • 1.14.4 (the oldest I could find from fabric)
  • 1.18.2 (end of caves & cliffs with the world height changes)
  • 1.21.1 (before sea level changing based on world generation in 1.21.2)
  • 1.21.5 (current version as of writing this)

and tested in 1.14.4 and 1.21.1 on a superflat with a spawnable platform at y 0 and y -64 respectively, and 1.21.5 on a world with normal terrain generation with a spawnable platform at y -64.

Could this 60-66 detail be in some version (that was removed shortly after?), on an older version than 1.14.4, or on bedrock?

Spawning

In bedrock, strays just need to be surface spawns, not direct sky access, similar to husks. Can't speak to whether it's the same mechanic for Java, but on bedrock I get them to spawn under slabs and in the dark (night, tinted glass, or an elevated leaf roof to disperse sky light). Converting

[edit source]
Latest comment: 26 May2 comments2 people in discussion

it says that it takes 7 seconds for a skeleton to convert into a stray, however the home page did you know says it takes 22 seconds. Why? ~2026-PrismarineWitherAxe11930 (talk) 15:53, 26 May 2026 (UTC)

It says skeletons start shaking after 7 seconds and convert to strays 15 seconds after that, so 22 seconds altogether. Rampage455 (talk) 21:06, 26 May 2026 (UTC)
