After volume 18.5 was made for the new print "premium collection" it's unlikely that 19 will ever happen. Think it was suposed to conclude with 21 or so volumes, which makes it so frustrating knowing how close it is to the end.
Given CLAMP's modern, speedier style it wouldn't surprise me if they never finish it but it also wouldn't surprise me if they worked at their own pace and eventually finish it off because they worked on it in-between other projects and then released it in consecutive issues
I see, thanks everyone! I'm still hoping (even a little) that this will be finished someday
saeran_choiiii said: why is the status set to hiatus? Is the series still coming back? I read that (one) of the reason(s) they did not finish this one was because of some disagreement with the editors, and they did not want to make any changes to the ending they had planned so they simply never finished it. For a more accurate/reliable reply Iโd suggest doing a quick check on google :P |
@sailorshirayuki Yeah! I actually searched for it before, but I found various explanations. However, I think this article makes the most sense It also mentions their discussion with the editor. not sure if this is legit though
The reason for the suspension of the magazine serialization is that the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, the Kobe serial child murders, and other bizarre incidents that occurred in Japan during the serialization, as well as the accompanying controversy and public opinion, made it difficult to write the final story, which is the story generally told as the reason for the suspension.... As for the 18.5 volume, before the premium collection, it was actually included as a booklet in an issue of the anime magazine Newtype that featured CLAMP. According to the four authors, there is a comment that they always want to write the ending, and there is currently a large exhibition of original artwork in Japan to commemorate CLAMP's 35th anniversary, and X is on the list of works in that exhibition, so I don't think it's that they dislike the work itself. However, after such a long period of inactivity, I feel that it is now conversely difficult to resume the manga series. If they resume, I'll usually read them.
@saeran_choiiii I do not believe that adequately explains why X is still on hiatus after 20 years. I think the biggest hurdle nowadays is that CLAMP's art style has changed completely. This would also explain why they never went back to finish Clover, a less controversial series that has been on hiatus longer than X. It's a shame, too, as I love the art of those series.

The series had some issues to continue due to an earthquake that happened while it was being released. After it, other situations related to political tension worldwide happened, that made a return even harder to happen (e.g. 9/11). The story was touching themes that weren't that far from reality anymore.
You can basically say the manga is dead. It was kicked out of the magazine, the authors took offense (they didn't like earthquakes), and they left. The story was great, but... Dead. At a certain point, the authors bent the plot around a severe natural disaster, which, ironically, happened in reality at the same time. The editors refused to publish the chapters with this catastrophe, and they didn't want to redo the storylines stretched to this arc, so they scrapped the whole story.
Glorious brilliant godlike autism.
@Cersil It was long time ago I think they should let it go. But I think they themselves dont want to continue this manga for some reason because so much time passed they definitely would find a way how to publish it once again especially being famous group of mangakas to begin with. Earthquake theme should not be a problem anymore since there is lot of other mangas/anime about catastrophes, so there is only one explanation that they DONT want to continue themselves... Also they have other discontinued series like Clover or xxxHolic
