Well that was a nonsensical episode. Never did I think we'd waste an episode repairing the relationship between Shinji and his dad! The one thing EVA couldn't accomplish...well one of many actually. XD Why'd they put Kaname in an antagonistic role anyway? Less tsun more dere! I didn't even notice until the credits that Mao, Weber and Teletha weren't in this one at all. XD Looks like we're back to the plot next though. |

This episode was particularly bad cause most of the characters sound so rigid, and it comes across like they're reading a script. It's been bothering me since the first episode cause I'm trying to think of who Sasuke sounds like, and it just came to me finally that I think he reminds me of Brandon Routh, which is not a good thing. |
| This is the worst episode of full metal panic and it isn't even close. The animation on the robot sports is laughably lacking. Heck, even the audience reactions don't get any animation frames. You could tell me they animated this show on a four-figure budget and I wouldn't even be surprised. We hear the same nerima daikon "pun" six times and it wasn't even funny the first time. (Actually it doesn't even really rise to the level of "pun," this attempt at a joke is the equivalent of referring to someone from Kentucky as "kentucky fried chicken" as if that's some kind of clever wordplay.) The whole nerima daikon "pun" is also incredibly culturally opaque for what is otherwise a very accessible series for foreign audiences, though I'm not holding that against it. There's really no reason for this episode to exist. Out of all of the characters we could have gotten a side episode to explore, Shinji might be dead last, possibly tied with Mizuki. (and, surprise surprise, Mizuki shows up for this episode. How is it that she and Kaname are friends after what happened in episode 8? why is she such an irredeemable garbage person every time we see her?) I don't care about Shinji and I don't care about his relationship with his dad. (If we really felt like we needed an episode with shinji, maybe to make us actually care about him, it would have focused on the relationship between him and sousuke instead, since shinji seems to be his only friend at school). None of what is happening in this episode really matters to any of the characters that we care about, and we don't get nearly enough laughs and entertainment to justify spending this much time doing absolutely nothing. I really hate this episode, because it feels like a stain on an otherwise great series. This was a squandered opportunity to explore any of the characters that we actually care about (like episode 13, where we actually get more insight into Mao and Tessa as characters). The only good thing about this this episode is that you can skip it entirely and lose nothing. Honestly I think this might be a better series doing a recap rather than give us this useless filer; if they were going to do a recap, 13.5 mid-season would have been the time to do it. |
