THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE. ---------------------------------------- I have to say that this was very interesting, to both plot and animation. Lets see how this anime turns out. Also, I love the how it's Jouji Nakata who voices the Count. Imo, the voice seems to suit him perfectly =)
I can already tell that I'm going to love this series.... the abstractness is awesome so far!!! >w<
i like the first ep so much and the art work is so good =D
My friend bugged me about this series to no end for a long time. I would have borrowed his set if he stilled lived nearby. Now that I've seen the first episode, I have to say he was pretty justified for bitching at me to watch it. I love the art direction.
Beautiful animation!!!
To be honest i have never readed 'The Count of Monte Cristo' story even on highschool, not even now if my career is based mostly on speechs and write/read. Anyway this first episode is really interesting, i'm really intrigued on Count's personality, why he did what he did? Why he obviusly chose Albert? So, to the animation, i must say is really beautifull and unique, the CGI scenes were just gorgeus, Jun Fukuyama's voice never stop amusing me, that fucking bastard can do whatever character he wants and he wont still be out of character. Simply artistic. *Rushing to the next episoide*
Yeah, I've never read the book either, shameful I know. Nice atmosphere, sound production. The direction can be a bit over the top but overall stylish and moody. The count indeed is one perplexing guy. "You did a good deed" and neither of the two question him about this bold statement. Ah well, I'm sure we'll get more insight later. Loved the last five minutes particularly.
"I'm starting to think mal is run by Xinil generating electricity on a bicycle." - idklol |
Wow, this show looks really interesting. And yeah, unique and awesome animation.
I'm not sold on it just yet, but we'll see.
"Yes, I have been deprived of emotion. But not completely. Whoever did it, botched the job." - Geralt of Rivia
Ugh the moving images on the clothing annoy me. Either way interesting first ep. No idea where this is going but I'll continue.
This show is incredible. I haven't been so blown away by Ep1 since Elfen Lied.
What an amazing first episode O_O had me from the start I mean with the different animation and interesting storyline thus far I have a feeling I'm going to enjoy this series =D
I know I'm going to like this alot- the animation is fantastically abstract! It's like "the count of monte cristo" on extacy. We'll see where this show goes..... totally enthralled.
This was the best first episode out of any anime I have seen. The visuals and everything comes together to keep you on your toes and keep you anxious. Not a dull moment.
Not bad first episode, let's see how the anime evolves !!
Damn, this was awesome! When I first saw a trailer/preview, I was annoyed by the clothes, but after watching ep01, I already know that I will love this one! Btw, those of you who haven't read the book should do, it's a cool story =) ...or listen to the audiobook instead =p ah, and there are some movies, huh? xD
holy damn pretty much awesome episode =)) gonna love the show
Oh my goddess, that is one SEXY count!!!
I love the first episode. I couldn't stop and I already saw up to ep 3 while I am writing this. The art is amazing and beautiful. I like the op and especially the ed. And Albert is cute :)
Thank you, Gankutsuou, for being the first anime in a long time to make me legitimately cry on the first episode. That execution scene was so brilliantly done.
Great first episode, in my opinion. Intriguing enough that it's definitely hooked me after the first episode... I'm interested enough to happily watch the second episode to see if I'll keep watching, at least! (And I probably will, if the first episode is any indication of the quality of the rest of the series.) True, the art style is really, really different... But the uniqueness is refreshing, I find, and is actually quite beautifully. It really stands out and... "pops out" at you, if that makes any sense.
It's funny, it's actually because I heard of this anime that I bought the book. As of right now, I'm about 300 pages or so from finishing it. So far I'm enjoying it, but it can be pretty slow sometimes. For those that haven't read it, the Count is described as a really eccentric character (such as the hollowed out gem you saw which he carries those pills in (but I'm not gonna say what they are)). But the anime starts a few hundred pages into the book, so I'm wondering if there're gonna be a lot of flashbacks later on about how the Count came to be how he is.
It's not breaking in if the door is unlocked. π Image
I have to say that I like the art direction. I just finished Romeo x Juliet, so I guess I have been in a mood for reimagined classics lately. I am definitely enjoying the absurdity of the animation.

hmm, that is some very different animation going on here, im not to sure about this, i hope the next episodes grow on me some more!
I don't get why they choose to remove the scene where d'Epinay encountered the count in the island of Monte Cristo, I thought this was a significant scene since it introduced the count and his excentricity better than in its episode. The background really is creative and sumptuous.
That was pretty cool and interesting, after all this hesitation, I have finally started watching it. Kind of scared at the lack of main female, and all this blushing (embarrassment aside) feels like it is heading for a mild yaoi. Maybe I'm just over reacting.
Villetta_Nu said: Oh my goddess, that is one SEXY count!!! / nods & blushes this first episode proved to be very interesting. i had planned to just watched a gew minutes but got wrapped up in the story i could not turn it off!! i have a feeling i am going to love this and spend all night watching it!! ^___^ |
That execution scene was absolutely brilliant! Wow, I didn't realise how glued I was to the screen until after, it was so intense. At first, I saw the first two minutes or so (this was years ago) and I just shrugged, said the art bothered me and closed it. Then, after hesitantly giving it another go, man am I glad I did! Off to the next episode!

Wow, one of the best first episode I've seen in a long time. Really interesting, I can already tell I'm going to love this :)
Seriously, don't ever try to ease a depression by hitting it off with a girl. It doesn't work especially in this episode. But anyways, great pilot episode.
Intriguing pilot episode, and dem clothes.
LOoks amazing for something that was made in 2004!
Interesting start of this anime, especially the take on the art/pattern use. The story in this first episode was rather weird especially the last scene. Also seining how a spaceship and digital clock as church bells and the earth instead of the moon meaning that this is rather a futuristic anime or something combined with old and new tech? A nice setting I'd say, hopefully they'll use it more in the next episodes! Funny thing is that the OP is the total opposite than the ED!
After all the good reviews I've seen for the anime, I decided to try it out. Of course, the art is what caught my attention when the episode started, it reminds me of Uta Koi, though I've only seen one episode of that anime. I was also surprised to hear FukuJun's voice. I didn't look at the seiyuu like I usually do. Anyways, this episode was interesting, but nothing that would make me continue watching it had I not known that it's apparently a very good anime. I will keep watching, but I'm probably going to put it on hold...I don't think I'm in the mood for anything too serious right now :P All I can say is, that count is very, very suspicious. Yet, Albert seems to be intrigued by that guy. I think he should listen to his friend, but of course, there wouldn't be much of a story if Albert wasn't interested in the Count.
ahh that art.....It's even worse then i remember it. Those who liked it forgive me. Sometimes it's ridiculously detailed like the elevator shaft but important parts like characters are just fast textured with something reminding me of wrapping paper. Well that would be ok but why the wrapping paper had to be static even when characters turns around or move elsewhere. Otherwise the story of faces moving in colorful collage of wrapping papers looks interesting and original. Sent with Mal Updater

Please learn about cel animation and its technical process. Learn how special effects and backlighting were done without computers. |
The art is beautiful, but I guess I have to get used to it... Albert is so painful to watch. I don't know, it just is.
Damn that art is so trippy and surreal, Albert's coat is like mesmerizing. That trial was nuts, there was a sinking feeling of injustice when I figured out that the card chosen was for that proud serial killer. I see younger Fukuyama and Hirakawa are voicing Albert and Franz, no wonder I enjoy hearing their voices so quickly. Interesting so far, definitely drawn in.
Looks like i''ll be enjoying this anime :)
Honestly, if anybody here likes this anime and hasn't read the book, you should try reading it. You'll be surprised just how much of the source material they used for this anime. I have only seen two episodes and am impressed at how faithful the adaptation is so far. Admittedly, though, they definitely added a lot of "anime flair" and Japanese perversion that wasn't in the book. -Arvis
Rewatching aww the trial scene so amazingly done and the art beautiful
The first time I watched this, this episode didn't impress me as much as watching it this time. Knowing where its going helps my appreciation for this episode's introductions and setup.
Talk about manipulating people! The Count is just something else. Interesting development at the end. Albert looks to be in a tough spot. A very strong first episode. 4.5/5

Wow loving the art style/overall setting. The Count is manipulative but pretty handsome/charismatic (no homo). great first episode
Seems pretty interesting. Can't wait to see some of the shit The Count does.
