On the surface, Jin Kanzaki may seem like an ordinary street urchin, but he possesses a supernatural strength that he uses for the welfare of his fellow man, or so his grandfather wishes. Much to his chagrin, his grandchild demands 10,000 yen for every good deed that he carries out. However, Jin's modest life is suddenly thrown into disarray when he encounters a player, a deadly entity possibly responsible for several mysterious murders.
As Jin attempts to navigate the situation by punching his way through every obstacle, a group of mysterious men desperately hunt down an individual with a ring-shaped mark on their hand. As they continue their investigation, various secrets surrounding the world begin to unravelβand it seems like Jin himself might be the solution to the puzzle.

My main gripe with the manga is that the entire story is an info dump, until the very end. The manga did too much with too little chapters, where it felt like it lacked actual contact, and it was more just more the author wanting to explain a complex plot, and the way its executed, adds to the confusion. Its kinda like math class, where if you don't pay close attention for one unit, the next unit just multiplies your preexisting confusion. And on top of that the amount of characters in the amagi core, holy, did I not know who
...
was who. You could blame these confusions partly on the reader but the author makes it very confusing to know whats happening. I also feel like the author could have done a better job at showing rather than telling, if that makes sense.
Aside from that it was overall pretty good.

I want to rate this much higher, but the story falls off hard towards the end. There are several major plot points that were alluded to and then almost completely dropped as if the author completely forgot that they were a part of the story. The build up of the story is really good and there is a lot of mystery surrounding the characters and the background to the events happening in the story, which all feel really good as your reading through it, up until the end.
The art style was great and made up for a lot of the shortcomings as far
...
as the writing was concerned. If you're a DevilMan fan, then I think that this is worth the read.

Zetman has cool action scenes, monsters with interesting designs and and even some emotive and heartwarming moments between its characters. That's why it's such a shame that it ends up being ruined by several major problems:
1- It's extremely bloated: the author did everything possible to extend the length of this manga, inserting lots of unnecessarily long explanations, portraying endless "philosophical" talks with no interest, and even reusing pages frequently (and not only in flashbacks: if a situation is momentarily interrupted by a different scene elsewhere, he makes sure to show you the last few pages of the first situation again when it resumes).
2- Many of
...
its situations / the behavior of many of its characters make no sense. Not only do some characters make absurd decisions / decisions that don't fit with their past, you also have others that are later revealed to have been traitors / have had hidden agendas... and if you review their past actions, they simply don't make sense if they always had that real objective.
This creates the feeling that the author didn't think that far ahead and simply assigned the behaviors he thought were "coolest" to each character, and then later invented some random plot twists to shock the readers.
3- It's not really finished. Its 226 chapters were only supposed to be "Act 1," and it was going to continue with an "Act 2" before being prematurely terminated. This means the "ending" is just like an interlude and doesn't feel like it finish the plot at all, not to mention all the mysteries left unresolved and the subplots / secondary characters that are literally forgotten.
It's also worth mentioning that the author tried to insert a couple of erotic scenes here and there... that's not bad in itself, but the mangaka seems obsessed with sexual assaults and insects, so you can imagine how it ended.
As I mentioned at the beginning, it's a shame because it could have been really good with half the length (10 volumes), and focusing only on being an action story with cool monsters and a couple of (more normal) sex scenes, but right now I can't recommend it.
If you're looking for a manga that conveys similar feelings but with good pacing and ideas, I'd say Gantz is a way better option (although it's clearly more violent).
