My foray into anime began, as it did for many others, with Sailor Moon and DBZ. Through the help of a family friend, I would later expand my horizons into various anime and manga, usually CLAMP manga. But my journey really started, when I watched the US Premiere of Naruto's 3rd episode.
After that, I made sure to watch the episodes as they came out on TV, but more importantly, this led me to start reading the Naruto manga. I then learned that my local library had manga in it, and from then on I began to read every manga series I could get my hands on, in an attempt to read every manga ever written, I quickly realized that was stupid, as I got older. I call this time period the Library Days, and I still hold a soft spot for the manga I read back then. After a brief dip, where I lost all access to a library, and couldn't afford to keep buying new volumes, except Negima, I discovered the internet... I'll let you fill in the details, but after that, I became a true anime and manga otaku. I'd spend all day and night reading and watching anything I had even a passing interest in, many times going without sleep just to get one more series out. Then, for whatever reason, I stopped. I just stopped, I didn't wind down or start tapering off, one day I was obsessed than the next day I wasn't. Rarely, I would watch an anime, but I think over this period, usually called the Hiatus or my Retirement, I watched 5 series. Over the course of 5 years. As time passed manga I used to read, started to be turned into anime, and I and grew an interest in sharing these series with others, prompting me to start using streaming services like Hulu and Crunchyroll, which since I already had the subscription, I decided to take advantage of, and watch some series that had come out during my Hiatus, or that I'd been suggested over the years. One of which I found so disappointing, I became vindictive and made an account on a website I'd been ignoring for years, just to negatively rate it, MyAnimeList. This brings us to the current era, the Post-Retirement Era, where I've returned to watching anime, and reading manga, though not with quite as much zeal as the Otaku Days. Since getting a MAL account I've gone down the list of every anime and manga on the site and added every single thing I remember watching or reading, double checking in many cases. Now I know I've missed a few series, that I remember but can't seem to find, and probably a few others I don't remember, but my current list contains almost everything. In March of 2018 I watched 100 anime, and made a blog about it each day. |
