Troubleshooting common issues.
Steam Controller FAQ and troubleshooting guide:
Here

My controller suddenly doesn't show up:
Please go to Big Picture->Settings->Controller Settings and check if the bottom of the screen has an option to "unhide devices". Steam has an option to hide non-gamepad devices that Steam thinks sees as a gamepad and we have had some users unintentionally hide their device.

My controller works in Big Picture but not in-game
  • Please check if you have Steam Input enabled for your controller type in the controller settings. If you go to controller configuration for your game it will give you an error message if the controller does not have Steam Input enabled
  • Please check if the Steam Overlay is functioning in the game when hitting shift + tab. Programs which cause games to elevate permssions like MSI Afterburner can cause the Steam Overlay to not function
  • Please try disabling any other overlays that interact with controllers like the Nvidia Experience overlay
  • Please try using a mouse/kb configuration in the game to see if that works. If community configurations use mouse/kb that is a good indicator that there is some incompatibility with the game or it erroneously is tagged with controller support.

I'm on Linux and Steam can't open my Steam Controller/PS4 Controller/Switch Controller:
You need to add udev rules for your device for Steam to be able to open it. Try installing the steam-devices packages if you are on Ubuntu otherwise refer to this forum post

Have y'all even bothered to update your FAQ for the new UI? How do you expect people to adjust to an involuntary change in UX if your own documentation is still written for the old UI you've taken away?
