Access Google Assistant with your voice

Important: To access this feature on some devices, you must have Voice Match.
When you say β€œHey Google,” this allows you to get hands-free help as it voice-activates your Assistant-enabled devices.

You can use a speaker or Smart Display with built-in Google Assistant.

Turn on Voice Match

Important: These steps won’t work with your Google Workspace account. Learn how to use a Google Workspace account on a device.

To use Voice Match, you must link a Google Account to the Google Assistant-enabled device. If you have multiple Google Accounts, you can choose which account you want to use.

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Home app πŸ‘ Google Home
    .
  2. At the top right, tap your Profile picture or initial πŸ‘ and then
    Assistant settings πŸ‘ and then
    Voice Match.
    • If you don't find β€œVoice Match,” tap View more settings.
    • If you have more than one home, tap the home you want to add Voice Match to.
  3. Tap Get started.
  4. Follow the on-screen steps.
    • To turn on Voice Match automatically for a speaker, Smart Display, or Smart Clock you add later to the same home, turn on Devices you add later.

Tip: If you get an error when you add a device, try to join the home linked to the device.

Turn off Voice Match

When you turn off Voice Match for your home, you can’t get personal results on any device in that home unless you set up personal results again. Also, when you turn off this setting, it won't turn off other Assistant audio or personalization settings.

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Home app πŸ‘ Google Home
    .
  2. At the top right, tap your Profile picture or initial πŸ‘ and then
    Assistant settings πŸ‘ and then
    Voice Match.
    • If you don't find β€œVoice Match,” tap View more settings.
  3. Tap the home you want to remove your voice from πŸ‘ and then
    Remove Voice Match from this home πŸ‘ and then
    Remove.

When you turn off Voice Match for a device, you can’t get personal results on that device unless you set up personal results again. Also, when you turn off this setting, it won't turn off other Assistant audio or personalization settings.

  1. Open the Google home app πŸ‘ Google Home
    .
  2. At the top right, tap your Profile picture or initial πŸ‘ and then
    Assistant settings πŸ‘ and then
    Voice match.
    • If you don't find β€œVoice Match,” tap View more settings.
    • If you have more than one home, tap the home that the device is in.
  3. Uncheck the box next to the device you want to turn off Voice Match for.
  4. Tap Remove.

When you turn off Voice Match for devices you add later, your Assistant won't recognize your voice. Also, this won't give personal results on new devices added to your home.

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Home app πŸ‘ Google Home
    .
  2. At the top right, tap your Profile picture or initial πŸ‘ and then
    Assistant settings πŸ‘ and then
    Voice Match.
    • If you don't find β€œVoice Match,” tap View more settings.
    • If you have more than one home, tap the home you want to update Voice Match settings for.
  3. Turn off Devices you add later.
Tip: You can also remove Voice Match from all devices. To remove Voice Match, tap Remove Voice Match from all my devices.
