Fix issues with “Hey Google” on a speaker, Smart Display, or Smart Clock

If your Assistant doesn’t respond on your device, follow these steps to help fix the issue.

Google Assistant support: Device not responding to hotword

Before you start

Check the speaker, Smart Display, or Smart Clock that you’re experiencing issues with.

  1. Make sure it’s plugged in and powered on.
  2. Make sure it’s connected to the internet and on the same Wi-Fi network as your mobile device.

Step 1: Make sure the microphone is turned on

Your Assistant won’t respond if your microphone is turned off or muted.

  • Speakers (except Google Home), Smart Displays, or Smart Clocks: On the back of your device, make sure the switch for the microphone is turned on. The switch is often orange or red when the microphone is turned off.
  • Google Home: On the back of your speaker, press the microphone mute button to turn the microphone on or off. Your Assistant will say whether you turned the microphone on or muted it.

Step 2: Restart your device

  1. Disconnect the power cable from your device.
  2. Reconnect the power cable.

Step 3: Check your Assistant’s language

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Home app 👁 Google Home
    .
  2. At the top right, tap your Profile picture or initial 👁 and then
    Assistant settings 👁 and then
    Languages.
  3. To change your Assistant’s language:
    1. Tap your current language.
    2. Choose a new language to use with your Assistant.

Step 4: Link your voice to your device

Your Assistant works better when your voice is linked to your device through the Google Home app 👁 Google Home
or the Google Assistant app 👁 Assistant

  1. Open the Google Home app 👁 Google Home
    .
  2. At the top right, tap your Profile picture or initial 👁 and then
    Assistant settings 👁 and then
    Assistant 👁 and then
    Voice Match.
  3. Under “Linked devices,” check if your device is listed.
    • Device listed: Your voice is already linked.
    • Device not listed: Tap Add devices, then follow the on-screen instructions.

Step 5: Teach Google to recognize your voice again

  1. Open the Google Home app 👁 Google Home
    .
  2. At the top right, tap your Profile picture or initial 👁 and then
    Assistant settings 👁 and then
    Assistant 👁 and then
    Voice Match.
  3. Under “Linked devices,” check if your device is listed.
    • Device listed: Your voice is already linked.
    • Device not listed: Tap Add devices, then follow the on-screen instructions.

Send feedback

If your Assistant still doesn’t respond, submit a feedback report from the Google Home app.

Step 1: Turn on device reports

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Home app 👁 Google Home
    .
  2. At the bottom, tap Home 👁 Home
    .
  3. Touch and hold the device you want to submit feedback for.
  4. At the top right, tap Device settings 👁 Settings
     👁 and then
     Recognition & sharing.
  5. Turn on Send [your device] usage data and crash reports to Google.

Step 2: Share your feedback

  1. Open the Google Home app 👁 Google Home
    .
  2. At the top right, tap your profile picture or initial 👁 and then
     Help & Feedback 👁 and then
     the type of device you'd like to submit feedback for 👁 and then
     Send feedback 👁 and then
     the device you'd like to submit feedback for.
  3. Enter a brief description of your issue.
  4. Check the box for Screenshot and System logs.
  5. At the top right, tap Send 👁 Send
