Start a video meeting or call someone
You can start a video meeting or call someone from Google Chat or Chat in Gmail.
If you have a work account, you can start a huddle in Chat. Learn about huddles in Google Chat.
Important: If your organization allows external users to join rooms or group conversations, anyone in the room or group can join a video meeting without permission.

Start a video meeting from Chat or Gmail
- On your iPhone or iPad, open the Chat app π Image
or Gmail app π Image
.- In Gmail: At the bottom, tap Chat π Image
.
- In Gmail: At the bottom, tap Chat π Image
- In Chat, open a conversation.
- In the reply area, tap Action menu π Add
π and then
Meet link π Image
π and then
Send π Image
. - To join a video meeting, tap Join video meeting π and then
Join now.

Call someone directly from Chat or Gmail
Important: To make direct Meet calls from the Google Chat app, you must have the latest version of the Gmail app.
You can start a voice or video meeting from Chat or Gmail. When the other person receives the call, theyβll hear a ring.
- In Chat, in the bottom navigation menu, tap Direct messages π Image
. - Open a direct message.
- At the top, click Start voice call π Image
or Start video call π Image
. - To end the call, click End call π Call end icon

Tip: If you call someone who uses the Chat app but doesnβt have the Gmail app:
- Their phone doesnβt ring.
- They receive a Chat notification that you started a voice or video call.
