Add or remove someone in a space

To add more people to a space in Google Chat, add them to the member list or mention them directly in the space.

Tips: If you use Chat with a Google Workspace account:

  • You can add a Google Group to the space. Learn how to add a Google Group to a space.
  • Your administrator can create a space that everyone in your organization can find. For example, your administrator can add a group named everyone@yourcompany.com to a space.
  • By default, any member can remove another member without administrator approval or restrictions, unless the space settings explicitly restrict membership management.

Add someone to a space

  1. On your computer, open Google Chat or Gmail.
    • In Gmail: On the left, click Chat.
  2. On the left, select the space.
  3. In the chat header, click the dropdown 👁 and then
    Manage members.
    • A list of current members displays.
  4. At the top right, click + Add.
  5. Enter the name or email address of the person or group.
  6. Click Add.

Tips:

  • To quickly add a new person to a space, in the reply area, enter @ followed by the person’s name.
  • To view people that you’ve invited to the space, click Manage members 👁 and then
    Invited.
  • An email invite is sent to someone if:
    • They haven’t had a conversation with you before.
    • They belong to another organization and the space was created by your Google Workspace account.
  • Someone you invite to a space is added directly if:
    • They’ve had a conversation with you before.
    • You're in the same organization.
  • People added directly to spaces don't get email notifications.
  • If you have a Google Workspace account, members of your organization may get an email invite or added directly to a space.

Remove someone from a space

Important: If you have the ability to manage members, you can remove members from a space. After you remove someone, they can't:

  • Participate in the conversation.
  • View that space’s message history.
  • Access shared files in the space.
  1. On your computer, open Google Chat or Gmail.
    • In Gmail: On the left, click Chat.
  2. On the left, select the space.
  3. In the chat header, click the dropdown 👁 and then
    Manage members.
  4. To the right of the person or group name, click More options 👁 Image
    👁 and then
    Remove from space.

Tip: If a person was added as part of a Google Group, remove them from the group first and then from the space.

Copy space member email addresses

  1. On your computer, open Google Chat or Gmail.
    • In Gmail: On the left, click Chat.
  2. On the left, select the space.
  3. In the chat header, click the dropdown 👁 and then
    Manage members.
  4. Click Copy member emails 👁 Image
