Mark a conversation or thread as read or unread

In Google Chat, you can mark conversations as unread to return to them later. You can also mark a conversation as read without opening it.

When you mark a conversation as unread, a dot shows up next to it in your conversation list.

Change a conversation to read or unread

  1. On your computer, open Google Chat or Gmail.
    • In Gmail: On the left, click Chat.
  1. In the navigation panel or "Home," next to the conversation or thread, click More options πŸ‘ Image
    .
  2. Click Mark as read πŸ‘ Image
    or Mark as unread πŸ‘ Image
    .

Tips: Other ways to mark a conversation as read or unread include:

  • At the top of a DM or space, click the conversation name πŸ‘ and then
    Mark as read or Mark as unread.
  • For individual messages in a conversation, point to the message πŸ‘ and then
    click More actions πŸ‘ Image
    πŸ‘ and then
    Mark as unread. This adds an β€œUnread” line above the message in the conversation.

Locate your unread conversations

  1. On your computer, open Google Chat or Gmail.
    • In Gmail: On the left, click Chat.
  1. On the left, click Home.
  2. At the top right, click Unread.
