Record a video or audio clip

Record your own video clips to add to a scene using the Vids recording studio. You can use the recording studio to:
  • Add a video recording of yourself.
  • Add a screen recording with narration.
  • Add a screen recording with video recording.
  • Add a voiceover.

The maximum length of any recorded video or audio clip is 10 minutes. Limits are subject to change. Learn about limits for Google Vids.

Add a video placeholder

Use video placeholders to plan where you’d like to add video clips from the recording studio or stock videos.

  1. On your computer, open Google Vids.
  2. In the start menu, select Blank Vid.
  3. From the timeline, click the scene where you want to add the recording πŸ‘ and then
    click Insert πŸ‘ and then
    Video placeholder πŸ‘ Image
    .
  4. Click on a video placeholder to add it to your scene.
  5. The video placeholder will be added to the scene for you to arrange and format.
  6. To add a video to the placeholder, click Select a video πŸ‘ Image
    or Record video πŸ‘ Image
    .

Record a video or audio clip

Record your own video or audio clips to add to a scene using the Vids recording studio.

Important:

  • To use a teleprompter in the Vids recording studio, add a script before opening the studio. Learn more about scripts.
  • Vids generative AI features, like "help me create" and read along teleprompter, are only available in English at this time.
  • You can add up to 50 audio objects (counting individual clips of music, sound effects, or voiceovers) per video. Limits are subject to change.
  1. On your computer, open Google Vids.
  2. In the start menu, select Blank Vid.
  3. From the timeline, click the scene where you want to add the recording.
  4. In the side panel, click Record πŸ‘ Image
    , then select:
    • Camera πŸ‘ Image
      : To capture video and audio from your computer’s camera and microphone.
    • Camera and screen πŸ‘ Image
      : To capture video and audio from your computer’s camera and microphone and your computer screen.
    • Screen πŸ‘ Image
      : To record your screen with system audio.
    • Voiceover πŸ‘ Image
      : To capture audio only from your computer’s microphone.
  5. Optional: If you use your camera, you can customize your backgrounds, filters, or appearance style.
    1. At the bottom right, click Apply visual effects πŸ‘ Image
      .
    2. To add a visual effect, select Backgrounds, Filters, or Appearance.
    3. If you want to add a custom background:
      1. Select Backgrounds.
      2. In the "Blur and personal backgrounds" section, select Add your own personal background πŸ‘ Image
        .

    Enable graphics acceleration

    To turn on graphics acceleration on Windows or Mac:

    1. At the top right of a Chrome window, click Menu πŸ‘ More
      πŸ‘ and then
      Settings.
    2. On the left, click System πŸ‘ Down arrow
      .
    3. Turn on Use graphic acceleration when available.
    4. Restart Chrome.

    Check WebGL support

    Web Graphics Library (WebGL) enhances web browsers with interactive elements. To apply visual effects, some browsers require WebGL.

    To check if your browser supports WebGL, go to webglreport.com. Then, verify that "Major Performance Caveat" is marked as "No." Your browser might disable WebGL if the device is:

    • Unstable
    • Causes crashes

    You can’t enforce WebGL on unstable WebGL devices. In some cases, it may help to update graphic card drivers or restart your browser. Learn more about WebGL support.

  6. At the bottom of your screen, click Start recording πŸ‘ Image
    .
  7. To stop or pause the recording, at the bottom of your screen, click Pause recording πŸ‘ Image
    .
  8. To watch or listen to your recording, click Preview πŸ‘ Image
    .
    • To add your recording to a video, click Insert πŸ‘ Image
      .
      • If you want to reuse the recording in a different video, you can copy and paste it into a new video.

To filter sound from your mic that isn’t speech:

  1. At the bottom right, click Menu πŸ‘ More
    πŸ‘ and then
    Settings.
  2. Turn Noise cancellation on or off.
    • To use Noise cancellation, you need to open Vids in Chrome.

Tip: If your scene has a video placeholder where you want to add your recording, click Record video πŸ‘ Image
in the placeholder to open the recording studio.

Use Vids Chrome extension to record your screen

Important: To record your screen, install the Vids Chrome extension. Learn how to install and manage extensions.

Record your screen with Vids Chrome extension

  1. On your computer, open Chrome. Get started with Chrome.
  2. At the top right, click Vids Chrome extension πŸ‘ Image
    .
    1. If you don’t see it, click Extensions πŸ‘ Image
      .
    2. Scroll to find Vids Chrome extension πŸ‘ Image
      .
  3. To record your screen, in the dropdown, select Screen. 
  4. Click Next.
  5. Select what you want to record and share:
    • Chrome Tab
    • Window
    • Entire Screen
  6. Optional: To record your desktop audio, turn on β€œAlso share system audio.” 
  7. Click Share.
  8. To start recording, click Start πŸ‘ Image
    . A 3-second countdown starts.
  9. To start a new recording, click Restart πŸ‘ Image
    .
  10. To finish and watch the recording, click Finish
    • To edit the recording, on the top right, click Edit in Vids.

Tip: To always have the Vids Chrome extension visible, click Extensions πŸ‘ Image
 , and then scroll to find Pin πŸ‘ Image
.

Use a teleprompter in the Vids recording studio

If you select either Camera πŸ‘ Image
or Camera and screen πŸ‘ Image
when you record a video clip, you can add a script and use a teleprompter.

  1. On your computer, open a video in Google Vids.
  2. From the timeline, click the scene where you want to add the recording.
  3. In the sidebar, click Record πŸ‘ Image
    .
  4. In the "Record" side panel, in the text box, add a script.
  5. Click Record myself πŸ‘ Image
    .
  6. Select an option:
    • Camera πŸ‘ Image
      : Capture video and audio from your computer’s camera and microphone.
    • Camera and screen πŸ‘ Image
      : Capture video and audio from your computer’s camera, microphone, and screen.
  7. Select your teleprompter mode:
    Teleprompter mode Description Tips
    Read along As you read from the script, Vids helps follow your speech to highlight the current portion of your script and scrolls to match your progress.
    • When you turn on read along mode, your browser controls the speech-to-text service. It determines how speech is processed and sends the text to Google Vids.
    Rolling The script scrolls at a constant speed.
    • To adjust the speed in which your script shows: Next to Speed πŸ‘ Image
      , use the slider.
    Manual Manually update your place in the script as you read.
    • Scroll the script up or down with your mouse or press the up or down arrows on your keyboard.
    • To adjust text size: Below where the script displays, find the Text size πŸ‘ Image
      .
      • To adjust text to your preferred size, use the slider.
    • To edit your script: Below the teleprompter, click Edit πŸ‘ Image
      .
      • In the "Record" side panel, update your script.
  8. When you’re ready, select Start recording πŸ‘ Image
    at the bottom of your screen.
  9. When you’re done, select Pause recording πŸ‘ Image
    at the bottom of your screen.
  10. To watch your recording, click Preview πŸ‘ Image
    .
    • To add your recording to your video, click Insert πŸ‘ Image
      .
      • Tip: If you want to reuse a recording you’ve created in one video in a different video, you can copy and paste your recording into a new video.
