Use document tabs in Google Docs
You can create and manage tabs in Google Docs to better organize your documents.
With tabs you can:
- Visualize the document structure anytime.
- Use the tabs as sections of a document for easier navigation.
Create a tab
Important: By default, a new document has a tab called "Tab 1." You canβt delete "Tab 1" unless another tab is present.
- On your iPhone or iPad, open a document in the Google Docs app π Docs
. - At the bottom, tap the tabs menu π and then
Add tab π Image
.
Manage your tabs
- On your iPhone or iPad, open a document in the Google Docs app π Docs
. - At the bottom, tap the tabs menu.
- To manage your tab, tap Tab options π More
. - You can either:
- Add: Tap Add subtab π Image
. - Delete: Tap Delete π Delete
. - Duplicate: Tap Duplicate π Image
. - Rename: Tap Rename π Image
. - Copy link: Tap Copy link π Insert link
. - Arrange: Tap Move up π Image
or Move down π Image
.
- Add: Tap Add subtab π Image
Find & navigate tabs
- On your iPhone, open a document in the Google Docs app π Docs
. - At the bottom of your document, you can find the current tab.
- To find other tabs, you can either:
- Find the list of tabs: To find the list of tabs, at the bottom, tap the tabs menu.
- Move between tabs: To move between tabs, tap the arrows π Image

- On your iPad, open a document in the Google Docs app π Docs
. - To find other tabs, at the bottom left, tap the tabs menu π Image
