Why is the Fitbit app prompting me to turn on location services?

The Fitbit app needs to connect with your Fitbit device to sync your data, update your clock, and get local weather. Depending on your phone, this may require Location Services or Nearby Devices permissions.

If you don't want to share your location, you can turn off the location permission for the Fitbit app on your phone.

Manage your Fitbit app's location settings

Apple requires the Always Allow location access settings to update your clock and weather wherever you go. If you do not want the Fitbit app to always access your current location, you can lock your Fitbit app's location to a specific city.

If you do this, your Fitbit app will no longer ask for permissions for your current location and will only show the weather and time of the city that you choose.

To lock your Fitbit app's location settings to a specific city:

  1. On your phone, open the Fitbit app 👁 Fitbit app
    .
  2. From any tab, tap Phone connected devices at the top left 👁 and then
select the device that you want to make changes on.
  3. Tap Apps 👁 and then
    Weather.
  4. Tap Permissions 👁 and then
    Turn off Location.
  5. Go back and tap Settings 👁 and then
    Add City 👁 and then
    manually select your city.

Tip: Do not lock your Fitbit app's location settings to a specific city if you still want the Fitbit app to show accurate time and weather based on your current location.

Manage persistent app permission requests

If the Fitbit app keeps asking for permission even after you gave it:

  1. On your phone, go to Settings.
  2. Tap Privacy & Security 👁 and then
    Location Services 👁 and then
    Fitbit.
  3. Change the setting to Ask Next Time Or When I Share.
  4. Open the Fitbit app 👁 Fitbit app
    .
    • When prompted, select Allow While Using App.

Common issues

My watch shows the wrong time

This happens when your device hasn't synced recently. Follow the permission steps above to allow your phone to connect, then pull on the Fitbit app screen to refresh. Your time will update automatically.

Fix sync issues with app permissions turned on

  1. On your phone, go to Settings.
  2. Tap Bluetooth 👁 and then
    turn off Bluetooth.
  3. Wait 10 seconds 👁 and then
    turn on Bluetooth.
  4. Restart your Fitbit device.
