How do I use the device lock on my Fitbit device?

Turn on the device lock to keep your Fitbit device secure. This feature is required if you use Google Wallet to make contactless payments.

To protect your financial data, Google Wallet requires a 4-digit PIN code. When you set up Google Wallet, the device lock is turned on automatically.

If you donโ€™t want to enter your PIN every time you wear your device, you can set it to ask for your PIN only when you make a payment. For more information, refer to Reduce PIN frequency.

  1. At the top left, tap Connections ๐Ÿ‘ Image
    ๐Ÿ‘ and then
    your device.
  2. Tap Device preferences ๐Ÿ‘ and then
    Device Lock.
  3. Turn on Device Lock and set a 4-digit PIN code.

Change the security level so your device only asks for your PIN when you make a payment.

  1. At the top left, tap Connections ๐Ÿ‘ Image
    ๐Ÿ‘ and then
    your device.
  2. Tap Device preferences ๐Ÿ‘ and then
    Device Lock.
  3. Tap Wallet Only to change the setting to โ€œEnabled for Google Wallet Only.โ€
    • Default setting: Your device locks automatically when you take it off your wrist.
    • Wallet Only: Your device remains unlocked for daily use but will ask for the PIN when you open Google Wallet.

If you forget your PIN, enter an incorrect PIN 10 times, or get the message "Unlock with your phone" on your device screen, follow these steps:

Step 1: Reset your PIN in the Google Health app ๐Ÿ‘ Image

Important: Resetting your PIN deletes all payment cards from Google Wallet on your device. Youโ€™ll need to add them again.

  1. At the top left, tap Connections ๐Ÿ‘ Image
    ๐Ÿ‘ and then
    your device.
  2. Tap Device preferences ๐Ÿ‘ and then
    Device Lock.
  3. Select Reset PIN Code.

Step 2: Sync your device with the app

Important: Your device doesnโ€™t sync with the app if the "Device Lock" option is missing, greyed out, or you get the error "Can't delete tokens when device settings are missing."

  1. Force quit the Google Health app ๐Ÿ‘ Image
    and re-open it.
  2. Try to sync your device by pulling down on the Today tab ๐Ÿ‘ Image
    .
  3. If the device syncs successfully, retry step 1.

Step 3: Factory reset your device

If your device screen is stuck on "Unlock with your phone" and the app canโ€™t connect to unlock it, perform a manual factory reset. This erases all data on the device and lets you set it up as new.

Frequently asked questions

If you have Google Wallet activated, a PIN is required by Google security policy to protect your payment information. To remove the PIN completely, you must first remove all payment cards from your Google Wallet on the device.

If you canโ€™t set up your PIN or Google Wallet due to account migration issues, such as email already in use or family group errors, refer to How to move your Fitbit Account to a Google Account.
