Learn about Dynamic layouts, Dynamic tiles & Face match

Google Meet has a new layout for laptops, desktops, and meeting room hardware that makes hybrid meetings better. You will notice improvements in how screen space is used and how all participants are represented.

Learn about changes on laptop & desktop devices

The previous tiled layout is replaced with a more flexible tile aspect ratio. Based on the size of your window and the number of participants in the meeting, video feeds may now appear in the grid as portrait tiles.

Some tiles will still appear as non-portrait tiles (landscape tiles), if:

  • Users are in Google Meet hardware rooms that do not have the Dynamic tiles feature active
  • Users are in Google Meet hardware rooms that do have Dynamic tiles active, but there are more than 3 users present
  • Users join meetings from Mobile devices
  • Itโ€™s a Presentation tile (they donโ€™t appear as portrait tiles)
  • You manually uncrop a users tile
  • A user has opted to have their tile always show as uncropped to others

You can still go back to the legacy tiled layout in Meet:

  1. In the meeting, at the bottom, click More options ๐Ÿ‘ Image
    .
  2. In the menu, click Change Layout ๐Ÿ‘ Image
    .
  3. Select Tiled (legacy).
  4. To close the pop-up screen, click Close ๐Ÿ‘ Image
    .

Tips:

  • Your layout option is saved for all your future meetings.
  • To change back to Auto (dynamic), follow the same steps.

Uncrop other users

If other participants move around a lot after theyโ€™re centered (framed), they can be cropped out of view.

To uncrop any other tile:

  1. Hover over the participantโ€™s tile that you want to uncrop.
  2. Click More options ๐Ÿ‘ Image
    ๐Ÿ‘ and then
Show the full video ๐Ÿ‘ Image
    .
    • To undo this and have them show in a portrait tile again:
      1. Follow the same steps.
      2. Select Crop this video ๐Ÿ‘ Image
        .

Tip: This action only affects your view of the participant in your layout.

Select from more flexible self-view options

There are different options for how your self-view is displayed in your layout, including:

  • In-grid cropped (default)
  • In-grid uncropped
  • Floating uncropped

Tip: Your self-view will be in-grid cropped by default unless you change it.

If you appear as a tile within the grid and want to switch to floating:

  1. Hover over your tile.
  2. Click More Options ๐Ÿ‘ Image
    ๐Ÿ‘ and then
    Remove this tile ๐Ÿ‘ Image
    .

If you appear as a cropped tile within the grid and want to view yourself uncropped:

  1. Hover over your tile.
  2. At the bottom right of your self-view tile, click Let Meet shrink my video for others ๐Ÿ‘ Image
    .

If you appear as an uncropped tile within the grid and want to view yourself cropped:

  1. Hover over your tile.
  2. At the bottom right of your self-view tile, click Crop ๐Ÿ‘ Image
    .

If you appear as a floating picture and want to switch to in-grid:

  1. Hover over your tile.
  2. Click More options ๐Ÿ‘ Image
    ๐Ÿ‘ and then
Show in a tile ๐Ÿ‘ Image
    .

Tips:

  • Your self-view preference remains the same for all future meetings unless you change it.
  • Uncropping your self-view in this way only affects your personal view of your video feed. Other users will find your video feed in the aspect ratio that works best for their screen. To ensure that you always appear uncropped on othersโ€™ layouts, follow the instructions here.

Make sure youโ€™re always well-centered (framed)

If you use Meet on laptop and desktop devices, youโ€™re automatically centered by default. If you have a custom background, youโ€™re centered continuously, even if you move around in the meeting. If you donโ€™t use a custom background, youโ€™re centered just once when you join the meeting.

If you move and arenโ€™t well-centered, you can easily re-center yourself:

  1. Hover over your tile.
  2. Click Reframe ๐Ÿ‘ Image
    .
    • If you use a virtual background, you canโ€™t use this option. In this case, auto framing happens continuously.

To turn this feature off:

  1. In the meeting, at the bottom, click More options ๐Ÿ‘ Image
    .
  2. Select Apply visual effects ๐Ÿ‘ Image
    .
  3. In the panel, click Appearance.
  4. At the bottom, turn off Framing ๐Ÿ‘ Image
    .
    • To turn auto framing back on, follow the same steps.

Tip: It's highly recommended to use this feature to lessen the chance that you get cropped out of view for others.

Prevent your tile from being cropped for others

Some users, especially those who communicate with sign language, might prefer that their own video feed isnโ€™t cropped into a portrait tile so as to avoid having their hand gestures cropped. To do this:

  1. In the meeting, hover over your self-view tile.
  2. Click More options ๐Ÿ‘ Image
    ๐Ÿ‘ and then
Show my full video to others ๐Ÿ‘ Image
    .
  3. In the pop-up that shows, click Show full video.

Tips:

  • This setting is saved for all your future meetings.
  • To return to the default behavior and be visible in portrait tiles again:
    1. Follow the same steps.
    2. Click Let Meet shrink my video for others.
