Learn about information stored on your photos
With Google Photos, you can find certain information about a photo's metadata, which can be based on the International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC) standards. IPTC includes copyright information, the creator's name, captions or image descriptions. Sometimes AI edits are included, but can be edited or removed.
This article focuses on photos that contain only IPTC metadata. IPTC is a long-standing format used by photographers and media organizations to describe and manage images, but the information can be edited or removed.
You may also find digital watermarks like SynthID embedded into images edited with generative AI which will surface on tools like Google Search or Lens. Learn more about SynthID.
Important:
- Not all images have AI info. The AI info section is removed for photos that haven’t been edited with AI or that don’t follow IPTC standards.
- Note that IPTC metadata can be modified.
Find AI info
- On your Android device, open the Google Photos app 👁 Photos
. - Select the photo you want to check the info.
- Tap More 👁 More

About. - Scroll to "How this was made".
Find AI info from Lens
- On your Android device, open the Google Photos app 👁 Photos
. - Select the photo you want to check the info.
- Tap More 👁 More
👁 and then
Google Lens.- By default, the option is set to "Search.”
- Swipe up.
- Tap About this image.
