I right click in the area of a web site and nothing happens....no menu...I CAN right click in the tool bar area and get a menu. I CAN right click on the desktop (Windows XP professional) and get a menu. Using Firefox 4.0.11 but this has been happening since 3+.

It is probably related to HW acceleration. Disable it. See /questions/772569.

Another possible solution could be to update your graphic driver from your computer or GPU manufacturer support site.

Issues with the right-click context menu not working can be caused by the Yahoo Toolbar (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions)

Create a new profile exclusively for the 4.0 beta version and create a desktop shortcut with -P "profile" appended to the target to launch that profile.

Thank you all for your responses...I have FINALLY got it working...this is what I did: Under HELP I selected "restart with addons disabled. OK then when the box comes up for the safemode selections I selected #2 "reset toolbars & controls" then more opens at the bottom I clicked on the left handside and Voilà! Right click menu started working immediately!
