AppTapp was one of the first jailbreak tools for the iPhone, for iPhone OS 1.0.0-1.0.2. It works by downloading the firmware file for the version selected, extracting the restore ramdisk and kernelcache, patching them, and uploading them and a new fstab as a payload to the iPhone. This file was only two lines long:
/dev/disk0s1 / hfs rw 0 1 /dev/disk0s2 /private/var hfs rw,noexec 0 2
