“Vibe coding” is a term coined in 2023 by Andrej Karpathy the AI researcher and OpenAI co-founder, to describe the practice of using generative AI-based tools and assistants to write code. In vibe coding, the user describes requirements for what they intend to build in natural language, rather than bothering with specifications.
The practice is controversial. Some users point to inaccuracies in the code produced. Others have embraced it as a way for people who are new to coding to build things, for more seasoned programmers to increase their productivity, or for teams and individuals to spin up prototypes quickly.
