First release, please comment

I just wrote this since I really think it was needed. There are so many bad remote desktop solutions out there that this would have saved me lots of time. Please comment. Suncore (talk) 15:55, 14 October 2025 (UTC)

Also, does anyone know why visual editing is no longer possible? Suncore (talk) 16:03, 14 October 2025 (UTC)

Custom EDID and dummy plugs are still headless

Latest comment: 26 December 20256 comments4 people in discussion

This is for the dubious check on the Custom EDID section (and also for dummy plugs). Because there's no physical monitor connected to the system, it is still considered a headless system since while the system is being tricked that a monitor is connected, there's physically no monitor connected. I'll make this clearer on the page. Rekindle0841 (talk) 17:08, 25 December 2025 (UTC)

No, the point was why do you need to mess with custom EDID when everything else in the Solutions section works without it? From the point of view of the software, your solution is not "headless". — Lahwaacz (talk) 09:20, 26 December 2025 (UTC)
Does this actually matter? From my point of view, as long as there no actual monitor is connected, a solution can be considered headless. Also, some programs break when there are no monitors connected, so I personally once had to use a custom EDID to provide a fake monitor for such buggy programs. — andreymal (talk) 10:56, 26 December 2025 (UTC)
I think the custom edid solution can be considered headless and the new section is also very useful so I hope we can keep it. Thanks. Suncore (talk) 11:37, 26 December 2025 (UTC)
Well the Solutions section starts with this requirement: "Fully headless. No monitor or monitor plug required." So adding a custom EDID section rubs me the wrong way... The scenario should be at least better specified. — Lahwaacz (talk) 12:32, 26 December 2025 (UTC)
If you checked the first sentence and the notes section it explicitly states that a Monitor refers to a physical display device, such as an LCD panel.. A custom EDID file is a software trick that's basically the software equivalent of a dummy plug, hence why I added it to the solutions section. Because of this, there's no new hardware being involved which means it counts for the first requirement on Solutions, which then can be combined with other methods such as RDP, VNC, or Sunshine for a fully headless, no additional hardware needed setup. KDE vs custom EDID

Through other paths, I got a Wayland KDE Plasma setup with a custom EDID. Can we not apply the custom EDID method to Wayland Plasma? It works for me at least. Alwyn (talk) 19:03, 30 March 2026 (UTC)
