The CData ODBC driver for Azure Analysis Services enables access to live data from Azure Analysis Services under the ODBC standard, allowing you work with Azure Analysis Services data in a wide variety of BI, reporting, and ETL tools and directly, using familiar SQL queries. This article shows how to use Clear Analytics, a Microsoft Excel Add-In, to connect to Azure Analysis Services as an ODBC source and create queries, tables, and charts (including PivotTables) based on Azure Analysis Services data.
If you have not already done so, provide values for the required connection properties in the data source name (DSN). You can use the built-in Microsoft ODBC Data Source Administrator to configure the DSN. This is also the last step of the driver installation. See the "Getting Started" chapter in the help documentation for a guide to using the Microsoft ODBC Data Source Administrator to create and configure a DSN.
To connect to Azure Analysis Services, set the Url property to a valid server, for instance, asazure://southcentralus.asazure.windows.net/server, in addition to authenticating. Optionally, set Database to distinguish which Azure database on the server to connect to.
Azure Analysis Services uses the OAuth authentication standard. OAuth requires the authenticating user to interact with Azure Analysis Services using the browser. You can connect without setting any connection properties for your user credentials. See the Help documentation for more information.
When you configure the DSN, you may also want to set the Max Rows connection property. This will limit the number of rows returned, which is especially helpful for improving performance when designing reports and visualizations.
You are now ready to create a chart with Azure Analysis Services data.
With a new data source in Clear Analytics established and a chart created, you are ready to begin analysis of Azure Analysis Services data. With the ODBC Driver for Azure Analysis Services and Clear Analytics, you can perform self-service analytics in Excel with live data, directly from Azure Analysis Services.
