Connect to Azure Synapse Data in JRuby

JRuby is a high-performance, stable, fully threaded Java implementation of the Ruby programming language. The CData JDBC Driver for Azure Synapse makes it easy to integrate connectivity to live Azure Synapse data in JRuby. This article shows how to create a simple JRuby app that connects to Azure Synapse data, executes a query, and displays the results.

Configure a JDBC Connection to Azure Synapse Data

Before creating the app, note the installation location for the JAR file for the JDBC Driver (typically C:\Program Files\CData\CData JDBC Driver for Azure Synapse\lib).

JRuby natively supports JDBC, so you can easily connect to Azure Synapse and execute SQL queries. Initialize the JDBC connection with the getConnection function of the java.sql.DriverManager class.

Connecting to Azure Synapse

In addition to providing authentication (see below), set the following properties to connect to a Azure Synapse database:

• Server: The server running Azure. You can find this by logging into the Azure portal and navigating to Azure Synapse Analytics -> Select your database -> Overview -> Server name.
• Database: The name of the database, as seen in the Azure portal on the Azure Synapse Analytics page.

Authenticating to Azure Synapse

Connect to Azure Synapse using the following properties:

• User: The username provided for authentication with Azure.
• Password: The password associated with the authenticating user.

Built-in Connection String Designer

For assistance in constructing the JDBC URL, use the connection string designer built into the Azure Synapse JDBC Driver. Either double-click the JAR file or execute the jar file from the command-line.

Fill in the connection properties and copy the connection string to the clipboard.

Below is a typical JDBC connection string for Azure Synapse:

Create a JRuby App with Connectivity to Azure Synapse Data

Create a new Ruby file (for example: AzureSynapseSelect.rb) and open it in a text editor. Copy the following code into your file:

With the file completed, you are ready to display your Azure Synapse data with JRuby. To do so, simply run your file from the command line:
