MicroStrategy is an analytics and mobility platform that enables data-driven innovation. When you pair MicroStrategy with the CData JDBC Driver for BambooHR, you gain database-like access to live BambooHR data from MicroStrategy, expanding your reporting and analytics capabilities. In this article, we walk through adding BambooHR as a data source in MicroStrategy Desktop and creating a simple visualization of BambooHR data.
The CData JDBC Driver offers unmatched performance for interacting with live BambooHR data in MicroStrategy due to optimized data processing built into the driver. When you issue complex SQL queries from MicroStrategy to BambooHR, the driver pushes supported SQL operations, like filters and aggregations, directly to BambooHR and utilizes the embedded SQL engine to process unsupported operations (often SQL functions and JOIN operations) client-side. With built-in dynamic metadata querying, you can use native MicroStrategy data types to visualize and analyze BambooHR data.
In addition to connecting to BambooHR in MicroStrategy enterprise products, you can connect to BambooHR in MicroStrategy Desktop. Follow the steps below to add BambooHR data as a dataset using JDBC and create visualizations and reports of BambooHR data.
Start by setting the Profile connection property to the location of the BambooHR Profile on disk (e.g. C:\profiles\bamboohr.apip). Next, set the ProfileSettings connection property to the connection string for BambooHR (see below).
In order to authenticate to BambooHR, you'll need to provide your API Key. To generate an API key, log in and click your name in the upper right-hand corner of any page to get to the user context menu. If you have sufficient permissions, there will be an "API Keys" option in that menu to go to the page, where you can create a new API Key. Additionally, set the Domain, found in the domain name of your BambooHR account. For example if your BambooHR account is acmeinc.bamboohr.com, then the Domain should be 'acmeinc'. Set both the API Key and Domain in the ProfileSettings property to connect.
For assistance in constructing the JDBC URL, use the connection string designer built into the BambooHR JDBC Driver. Either double-click the JAR file or execute the jar file from the command-line.
java -jar cdata.jdbc.api.jar
Fill in the connection properties and copy the connection string to the clipboard.
👁 Using the built-in connection string designer to generate a JDBC URL (Salesforce is shown.)When you configure the JDBC URL, you may also want to set the Max Rows connection property. This will limit the number of rows returned, which is especially helpful for improving performance when designing reports and visualizations.
A typical connection string follows:
JDBC;MSTR_JDBC_JAR_FOLDER=PATH\TO\JAR\;DRIVER=cdata.jdbc.api.APIDriver;URL={jdbc:api:Profile=C:\profiles\BambooHR.apip;ProfileSettings='Domain=acmeinc;APIKey=your_api_key';};
👁 Creating a new data source for BambooHR.Using the CData JDBC Driver for BambooHR in MicroStrategy Desktop, you can easily create robust visualizations and reports on BambooHR data.
