The CData ODBC Drivers can be used in any environment that supports loading an ODBC Driver. In this tutorial we will explore using the CData ODBC Driver for Cvent from within PyCharm. Included are steps for adding the CData ODBC Driver as a data source, as well as basic PyCharm code to query the data source and display results.
To begin, this tutorial will assume that you have already installed the CData ODBC Driver for Cvent as well as PyCharm.
Follow the steps below to add the pyodbc module to your project.
You can now connect with an ODBC connection string or a DSN. See the Getting Started section in the CData driver documentation for a guide to creating a DSN on your OS.
Before you can authenticate to Cvent, you must create a workspace and an OAuth application.
To create a workspace:
| event/attendees:read | event/attendees:write | event/contacts:read |
| event/contacts:write | event/custom-fields:read | event/custom-fields:write |
| event/events:read | event/events:write | event/sessions:delete |
| event/sessions:read | event/sessions:write | event/speakers:delete |
| event/speakers:read | event/speakers:write | budget/budget-items:read |
| budget/budget-items:write | exhibitor/exhibitors:read | exhibitor/exhibitors:write |
| survey/surveys:read | survey/surveys:write |
After you have set up a Workspace and invited them, developers can sign up and create a custom OAuth app. See the Creating a Custom OAuth Application section in the Help documentation for more information.
After creating an OAuth application, set the following connection properties to connect to Cvent:
Below is the syntax for a DSN:
[CData Cvent Source] Driver = CData ODBC Driver for Cvent Description = My Description OAuthClientId = MyOAuthClientId OAuthClientSecret = MyOAuthClientSecret InitiateOAuth = GETANDREFRESH
Instantiate a Cursor and use the execute method of the Cursor class to execute any SQL statement.
import pyodbc
cnxn = pyodbc.connect('DRIVER={CData ODBC Driver for Cvent};OAuthClientId = MyOAuthClientId;OAuthClientSecret = MyOAuthClientSecret;InitiateOAuth = GETANDREFRESH;')
cursor = cnxn.cursor()
cursor.execute("SELECT Id, Title FROM Events WHERE Virtual = 'true'")
rows = cursor.fetchall()
for row in rows:
print(row.Id, row.Title)
After connecting to Cvent in PyCharm using the CData ODBC Driver, you will be able to build Python apps with access to Cvent data as if it were a standard database. If you have any questions, comments, or feedback regarding this tutorial, please contact us at [email protected].

👁 Cvent IconThe Cvent ODBC Driver is a powerful tool that allows you to connect with live data from Cvent, directly from any applications that support ODBC connectivity.
Access Cvent data like you would a database - read, write, and update Cvent 0, etc. through a standard ODBC Driver interface.
