Use CData Connect AI to connect to Elasticsearch Data and provide access to live Elasticsearch data for custom reports in the Power BI Service.

Power BI transforms your company's data into rich visuals for you to collect and organize so you can focus on what matters to you. When paired with CData Connect AI, you get access to Elasticsearch data for visualizations, dashboards, and more. This article shows how to connect to Elasticsearch in CData Connect AI, publish a dataset from Power BI Desktop to the Power BI Service and then create reports on Elasticsearch data in the Power BI service.

About Elasticsearch Data Integration

Accessing and integrating live data from Elasticsearch has never been easier with CData. Customers rely on CData connectivity to:

  • Access both the SQL endpoints and REST endpoints, optimizing connectivity and offering more options when it comes to reading and writing Elasticsearch data.
  • Connect to virtually every Elasticsearch instance starting with v2.2 and Open Source Elasticsearch subscriptions.
  • Always receive a relevance score for the query results without explicitly requiring the SCORE() function, simplifying access from 3rd party tools and easily seeing how the query results rank in text relevance.
  • Search through multiple indices, relying on Elasticsearch to manage and process the query and results instead of the client machine.

Users frequently integrate Elasticsearch data with analytics tools such as Crystal Reports, Power BI, and Excel, and leverage our tools to enable a single, federated access layer to all of their data sources, including Elasticsearch.

Getting Started

Configure Elasticsearch Connectivity for Power BI Service

Connectivity to Elasticsearch from Power BI Service is made possible through CData Connect AI. To work with Elasticsearch data from Power BI Service, we start by creating and configuring a Elasticsearch connection.

  1. Log into Connect AI, click Sources, and then click Add Connection
  2. πŸ‘ Adding a Connection
  3. Select "Elasticsearch" from the Add Connection panel
  4. πŸ‘ Selecting a data source
  5. Enter the necessary authentication properties to connect to Elasticsearch.

Set the Server and Port connection properties to connect. To authenticate, set the User and Password properties, PKI (public key infrastructure) properties, or both. To use PKI, set the SSLClientCert, SSLClientCertType, SSLClientCertSubject, and SSLClientCertPassword properties.

The data provider uses X-Pack Security for TLS/SSL and authentication. To connect over TLS/SSL, prefix the Server value with 'https://'. Note: TLS/SSL and client authentication must be enabled on X-Pack to use PKI.

Once the data provider is connected, X-Pack will then perform user authentication and grant role permissions based on the realms you have configured.

  6. Click Save & Test
  7. Navigate to the Permissions tab in the Add Elasticsearch Connection page and update the User-based permissions. πŸ‘ Updating permissions

With the connection configured, you are ready to connect to Elasticsearch data from the Power BI service.

Publish a Dataset from Power BI Desktop

Once you connect to Elasticsearch in Connect AI, you can create a dataset in Power BI desktop and publish the dataset to the Power BI service.

  1. Open Power BI Desktop and click Get Data -> Online Services -> CData Connect AI and click "Connect"
  2. Click "Sign in" and authenticate with your CData Connect AI account πŸ‘ Authenticating with Connect AI
  3. After signing in, click "Connect" πŸ‘ Connecting to Connect AI
  4. Select tables in the Navigator dialog πŸ‘ The available tables. (Salesforce tables are shown)
  5. Click Load to establish the connection to your Elasticsearch data from Power BI
  6. Define any relationships between the selected entities on the Relationships tab.
  7. Click Publish (from the Home menu) and select a Workspace.

Build Reports and Dashboards on Elasticsearch Data in the Power BI Service

Now that you have published a dataset to the Power BI service, you can create new reports and dashboards based on the published data:

  1. Log in to PowerBI.com.
  2. Click Workspaces and select a workspace.
  3. Click Create and select Report.
  4. Select the published dataset for the report. πŸ‘ Select a dataset
  5. Choose fields and visualizations to add to your report. πŸ‘ Visualizing Elasticsearch data in the Power BI service

Live Access to Elasticsearch Data from Cloud Applications

Now you have a direct connection to live Elasticsearch data from the Power BI service. You can create more data sources and new visualizations, build reports, and more β€” all without replicating Elasticsearch data.
