Google AppSheet is a no-code development platform for application software, enabling users to design mobile, tablet, and web applications. When combined with CData Connect AI, you gain immediate cloud-to-cloud access to GitLab data for business applications. This article outlines the process of connecting to GitLab using Connect AI and constructing a basic app from GitLab data within AppSheet.
CData Connect AI offers a dedicated cloud-to-cloud interface for GitLab, enabling the creation of reports directly from live GitLab data within AppSheet, all without the need for data replication to a native database. When you design applications that interact with data, AppSheet formulates SQL queries to retrieve the required information. With its inherent optimized data processing capabilities, CData Connect AI efficiently channels all supported SQL operations, including filters and JOINs, directly to GitLab. This leverages server-side processing to swiftly deliver the requested GitLab data.
Connectivity to GitLab from AppSheet is made possible through CData Connect AI. To work with GitLab data from AppSheet, we start by creating and configuring a GitLab connection.
To connect to GitLab, use either OAuth or a personal access token:
Register an OAuth application in GitLab under Edit Profile > Applications (or group Settings > Applications). Set the Redirect URI to https://oauth.cdata.com/oauth/. Note the Application ID (OAuth Client Id) and Secret (shown once). Then set:
Click Sign In to complete OAuth authentication.
In GitLab, navigate to Edit Profile > Access Tokens > Add new token. Select the required scopes (such as api, read_api, read_user, read_repository) and set an expiration date. Copy the token immediately (shown only once). Then set:
When connecting to Connect AI through the REST API, the OData API, or the Virtual SQL Server, a Personal Access Token (PAT) is used to authenticate the connection to Connect AI. It is best practice to create a separate PAT for each service to maintain granularity of access.
With the connection configured and a PAT generated, you are ready to connect to GitLab data from AppSheet.
The steps below outline connecting to CData Connect AI from AppSheet to create a new GitLab data source.
Once you create the data source for GitLab, you can start building apps on GitLab data. Start by clicking "My apps" in the menu.
At this point, you can configure the design of your app, selecting which columns from the selected table to display, use as labels, and more. Preview the app in the preview panel and then publish or share it when ready.
