LINQ offers versatile querying capabilities within the .NET Framework (v3.0+), offering a straightforward method for programmatic data access through CData ADO.NET Data Providers. In this article, we demonstrate the use of LINQ to retrieve information from the MySQL Data Provider.

This article illustrates using LINQ to access tables within the MySQL via the CData ADO.NET Data Provider for MySQL. To achieve this, we will use LINQ to Entity Framework, which facilitates the generation of connections and can be seamlessly employed with any CData ADO.NET Data Providers to access data through LINQ.

  1. In a new project in Visual Studio, right-click on the project and choose to add a new item. Add an ADO.NET Entity Data Model.
  2. Choose EF Designer from Database and click Next.
  3. Add a new Data Connection, and change your data source type to "CData MySQL Data Source".
  4. Enter your data source connection information.

    The CData Provider supports connecting to on-premises and cloud-hosted versions of MySQL such as Amazon RDS for MySQL, Google Cloud SQL for MySQL, Azure Database for MySQL, or Oracle MySQL HeatWave. The Server and Port properties must be set to a MySQL server. If IntegratedSecurity is set to false, then User and Password must be set to valid user credentials. Optionally, Database can be set to connect to a specific database. If not set, tables from all databases will be returned.

    SSH Connectivity for MySQL

    You can use SSH (Secure Shell) to authenticate with MySQL, whether the instance is hosted on-premises or in supported cloud environments. SSH authentication ensures that access is encrypted (as compared to direct network connections).

    SSH Connections to MySQL in Password Auth Mode

    To connect to MySQL via SSH in Password Auth mode, set the following connection properties:

    • User: MySQL User name
    • Password: MySQL Password
    • Database: MySQL database name
    • Server: MySQL Server name
    • Port: MySQL port number like 3306
    • UserSSH: "true"
    • SSHAuthMode: "Password"
    • SSHPort: SSH Port number
    • SSHServer: SSH Server name
    • SSHUser: SSH User name
    • SSHPassword: SSH Password

    SSH Connections to MySQL in Public Key Auth Mode

    To connect to MySQL via SSH in Password Auth mode, set the following connection properties:

    • User: MySQL User name
    • Password: MySQL Password
    • Database: MySQL database name
    • Server: MySQL Server name
    • Port: MySQL port number like 3306
    • UserSSH: "true"
    • SSHAuthMode: "Public_Key"
    • SSHPort: SSH Port number
    • SSHServer: SSH Server name
    • SSHUser: SSH User name
    • SSHClientCret: the path for the public key certificate file

    Below is a typical connection string:

    User=myUser;Password=myPassword;Database=NorthWind;Server=myServer;Port=3306;
  5. 👁 Required connection properties for the data source. (QuickBooks is shown.)
  6. If saving your entity connection to App.Config, set an entity name. In this example we are setting MySQLEntities as our entity connection in App.Config.
  7. Enter a model name and select any tables or views you would like to include in the model.

Using the entity you created, you can now perform select , update, delete, and insert commands. For example:

MySQLEntities context = new MySQLEntities();

var ordersQuery = from orders in context.Orders
 select orders;

foreach (var result in ordersQuery) {
 Console.WriteLine("{0} {1} ", result.Id, result.ShipName);
}
